Sony reportedly developing two SoCs for next-gen consoles
An earlier report said AMD would develop the PlayStation 6's SoC after Sony failed to reach a partnership with Intel, costing the chipmaker $30 billion in potential revenue. Now, a new leak from NeoGAF forums reveals an interesting new development in the saga. Noted leaker Kepler_L2, who is well known on X for their AMD-centric leaks, says AMD is developing two SoCs for Sony.
One of them is certain to find itself powering the PlayStation 6. The second one could power an Xbox Series S|X successor, provided Microsoft ditches the strategy of an affordable console next generation. However, Kepler explicitly states it is more 'affordable', tacitly suggesting it isn't as powerful as a console-grade chip. Hence, it would be reasonable to assume it will power a handheld.
An earlier report stated Sony is 'paying close attention' to the handheld market following the PlayStation Portal's success. That said, there's a high chance Sony could launch a newer, more powerful PlayStation Portal to supplement the PlayStation 5 Pro. Given the original Portal ran an off-the-shelf Snapdragon chip, the mystery chip in question could be used for the putative PlayStation Vita sequel.
