Sony has just delivered a major firmware update for the WF-1000XM5, full details of which we have covered separately. Offered alongside an equivalent for the WH-1000XM6 (curr. $448 on Amazon), Version 6.0.0 for Sony's high-end earbuds wireless earbuds could be the last before it moves onto the WF-1000XM6.
Recently, an early certification indicated that we may not see the WF-1000XM5's successor before the start of next year. Now, the WF-1000XM6 has surfaced on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ahead ot The Walkman Blog's expectations. Unfortunately, the design of Sony's next pair of wireless earbuds remains unknown for now.
Instead, the FCC reports that the WF-1000XM6 features Goertek-manufactured antennas and a 3.85 V battery. Additionally, the regulatory body's initial documentation mentions the inclusion of a MediaTek chipset. At this stage, The Walkman Blog has inferred that this chipset is the same MT2885 found in Sony's LinkBuds earbuds. Either way, the presence of a MediaTek chipset would preclude the WF-1000XM6 from supporting Qualcomm aptX codecs. Unfortunately, it still remains unclear at this stage whether Sony will get the WF-1000XM6 out the door before the holiday season.
