SolarSaga 40 Air: Jackery launches compact 40-watt panel with USB-C for backpacks

Jackery has officially announced the SolarSaga 40 Air for the European market. It serves as the successor to the similarly compact SolarSaga 40 Mini, though Jackery has introduced several improvements and changes. A new feature is the sun-angle indicator, designed to assist with the optimal positioning of the panel.
Additionally, the connection box for the extension cables (featuring USB-A and USB-C) has been downsized. As a result, the folded panel is now only 2 cm thick, compared to 3 cm for its predecessor. The aspect ratio of the panels has also been modified. Consequently, the total system is now approximately 34 cm high (up from 30 cm), but only about 23 cm wide when folded (down from 25 cm).
This change should make the SolarSaga 40 Air more compatible with laptop backpacks, an area where the predecessor had weaknesses. A new protective sleeve is also included, though it inevitably adds some bulk during use. A significant improvement was achieved in terms of weight: the new panel weighs only 900 grams, down from 1.2 kg. Furthermore, the new panel can also capture light from the rear side.
According to Jackery, the BNPI value (bifacial performance value) is 47 watts. The scope of delivery also includes a DC8020-to-DC7909 adapter and a DC8020 cable with a USB-A/C box. According to the technical specifications currently available only on the US website, the panel delivers a maximum of 12 watts via USB Type-A and 15 watts via USB-C. These figures refer to the 5-volt rail in each case.
For USB-C, the "USB Type-C Current" standard is supported, which does not require special negotiation with the connected device. However, USB Power Delivery is missing; this would be required for outputs beyond 15 watts. While some laptops can only be charged via Power Delivery, well-designed devices are also capable of accepting Type-C Current. The predecessor, the SolarSaga 40 Mini—which currently retails for 129 euros—was likewise limited to 15 watts via the USB-C port.
However, Jackery once again offers a direct connection for power stations without the need for USB conversion. In Europe, Jackery initially plans to launch the panel only as a bundle with the Explorer 300D power station. The package is expected to cost 359 euros and should be available shortly. A standalone release is planned for a later date. In the US, the Air panel is already listed on Amazon, where it costs $129 (excluding tax). Pricing is therefore expected to align with that of its predecessor.
