Seiko’s new limited-edition 5 Sports GMT looks like a Dr Pepper can

Seiko’s latest 5 Sports GMT is a US exclusive.
Seiko’s US-exclusive 5 Sports SKX GMT HDB016 pairs a burgundy sunray dial with a red-and-brown bezel reminiscent of a Dr Pepper can. Limited to 5,500 pieces and priced at $525, the automatic GMT offers a 41-hour power reserve and 100-meter water resistance, with a US launch expected on November 2.

Seiko has been rolling out several regional exclusives as of late. In August, Europe received the limited-edition Prospex HBC010, featuring a dark green sunray dial inspired by Austria's Lake Hallstatt. This was followed by the stunning Prospex India Limited Edition HBB005K1 based around the theme of the Indian tiger and the Asia-exclusive Prospex HBB006 “Blue Tears.” Now, the US is getting its own exclusive watch.

Seiko is bringing something a little different stateside: a 5 Sports GMT with a rich burgundy dial and a red-and-brown bezel that looks like it belongs on the side of a can of Dr Pepper.

Dubbed the HDB016 5 Sports SKX GMT U.S. Limited Edition, the new watch is limited to 5,500 units and features a deep burgundy sunray dial and a rotating 24-hour bezel split between dark brown and bright red.

The combination makes for a distinctly retro look, and the colors might remind some of you of a certain cherry-flavored soft drink. The dark half of the bezel represents nighttime hours, while the red section marks daytime, making it easier to track a second time zone at a glance.

Aside from the color scheme, you're looking at a fairly standard 5 Sports package, with the watch featuring broad hour markers and handset treated with LumiBrite, and a gold-tone GMT hand that matches the accents around the inner 24-hour scale.

The watch comes on a stainless steel bracelet, with the signature crown placement at 4 o’clock completing the SKX-inspired design. The stainless steel case offers 100 meters of water resistance.

Under the hood, the HDB016 is powered by Seiko’s automatic 4R34 movement, which offers roughly 41 hours of power reserve and lets you adjust the 24-hour hand independently to track another time zone. A screw-down exhibition caseback lets you see the movement in action.

The HDB016 appears to share much of its design with last year’s Thong Sia-exclusive SSK031, but the new model gets a different bezel and updated colors around the dial.
