Seiko has launched a new Prospex Alpinist SPB531 limited edition watch exclusive to the European market. Seiko originally made the watch in 1959 for Japanese mountaineers to reliably track their time and find their way home. Now, the new variant comes with an upgraded caliber movement and a new dial colorway. More specifically, the Prospex Alpinist SPB531 features a new blue dial inspired by the night sky above the Matterhorn.
The blue dial has a subtle vertical striped pattern paired with cathedral-style silver-toned hour and minute hands and a date window positioned at 3 o’clock. This watch has a stainless steel case, measuring 46.4 x 39.5 x 13.2 mm (1.8 x 1.5 x 0.5 inches) and a deep blue leather strap with a three-fold clasp with push button release. There’s also a rotating compass bezel inside the dial, which can be used to navigate your way home.
Based on Seiko’s popular SPB121 Alpinist model (curr. availabel at $625 on Amazon), the Prospex Alpinist SPB531 is powered by the 6R35 caliber movement. The company’s mid-range caliber runs at a frequency of 21,600 vph and provides up to 70 hours of power reserve. Furthermore, the case is complemented by a sapphire crystal with a magnifier. Plus, the watch has 200 m (20 bar) of water resistance, making it suitable for light water activities.
The Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB531 limited edition watch is priced at CHF 930/£780 and is now available for preorder via Seiko Boutiques Europe. It’s worth noting that the timepiece is a limited edition of only 3,000 pieces. You can learn more about the Prospex Alpinist SPB531 via Seiko’s official website.
