The rollable or slidable phone is a form-factor that may have the potential to take over from foldables once they hit the market. At least, this is what some OEMs seem to think, as they have one or two in development already. They include TCL, OPPO – and Samsung, a company that now seems to have settled on a product name for its inaugural next-gen flexible-display device.
The South Korean giant has just applied for a possibly relevant term as a trademark in Europe. Going by the OEM’s normal pattern for product monikers, the name “Galaxy Z Slide” could be seen swirling around the rumor mill in the next few years. The pending trademark falls into category 9 of the EUIPO’s trademarking regime, which encompasses a wide range of electronics from USB drives to smartphones.
Therefore, it is indeed possible that the Galaxy Z Slide is an emerging in-house competitor for the Z Fold and Flip lines. Samsung has indicated that it has displays that could go with the name in the works at present, and could be ready to launch its first rollable device as early as 2022. On the other hand, nothing concerning rollable tech is certain at this point.
