Sometimes, the arrival of a new product makes its still-excellent predecessor the smartest choice. That’s exactly the case with Samsung’s flagship soundbars. While the brand-new HW-Q990F now naturally takes the crown as Samsung’s top offering, last year's HW-Q990D still remains an impressive soundbar—especially now that it has received a massive price drop.
Right now, Woot has last year’s flagship HW-Q990D soundbar on sale for just $948, a full 53% off its original $1,998 price and one of the lowest we’ve seen for this model. This is a brand-new unit—not refurbished or open-box—and comes with all original accessories. Note, however, that it’s not covered by Samsung’s standard 1-year warranty; Woot instead offers a 90-day limited warranty from the date of purchase.
Don’t let "last year's model" fool you; the HW-Q990D was Samsung’s top dog in 2024 for a reason. It delivers an expansive 11.1.4-channel surround sound experience with Dolby Atmos support. It also retains two HDMI 2.1 ports for 4K @ 120Hz HDR passthrough (essential for PS5 and Xbox Series X owners) and boasts Samsung's usual audio enhancements such as SpaceFit Pro room calibration and Q-Symphony integration with compatible Samsung TVs. Connectivity-wise, you're getting support for Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, Alexa integration, AirPlay, Chromecast, Tidal Hi-Fi connect, and Spotify Connect.
So, what changed with the new 2025 HW-Q990F model? Mainly, Samsung redesigned the subwoofer to be smaller while using new 8-inch dual drivers. The main soundbar and rear speakers? Largely the same. Yes, the HW-Q990F’s subwoofer has a more modern look and produces tight bass at normal volumes, but as Rtings observed in their review, the new soundbar exhibits slightly more bass compression at max volume than the HW-Q990D. The publication further notes that depending on your preference, you may find the bass tuning of one more appealing than the other. So, there are no clear winners.
HW-Q990D Vs HW-Q990F: Which one should you buy?
Since there’s little separating these soundbars in terms of overall performance, our advice is to go with whichever you can find on sale and is cheaper. We recently spotted the HW-Q990F on sale for $998, a flat 50% off its original price. If the offer is still live when you’re reading this, it’s a better buy compared to the HW-Q990D. For just $50 extra, you get an aesthetically pleasing subwoofer and, more importantly, Samsung’s full 1-year warranty. That said, if it’s out of stock, you’re not missing much in terms of raw audio performance by going with the HW-Q990D.
