It is now possible to add an E Ink secondary display to Samsung's flagship smartphone without any modding whatsoever. Instead, the E Ink display can be connected via NFC and sits in the back of a silicone case to show favourite photos or even digital airline, concert or railway tickets, among other uses.

An intriguing third-party case for the Galaxy S24 Ultra (curr. $1,099.99 on Amazon) has appeared on marketplaces like AliExpress. As the images throughout this article show, the case has a simple silicone construction. However, it also contains an E Ink display that measures 3.7-inches across.

Specifically, this panel outputs at 416 x 240 pixels and supports four colours. Thus, it should still be relatively power efficient, particularly compared to IPS and OLED equivalents. Allegedly, the E Ink panel consumes sips so little power that it can be powered by the Galaxy S24 Ultra's NFC chip while also receiving data throughput.

On the one hand, the E Ink display can show a favourite image, such as a pet, as one image below shows. On the other hand, it should be possible to show a digital ticket of some kind, such as for an airline, concert or a railway, even when the Galaxy S24 Ultra has run out of battery. Please note that the display takes about 40 seconds to fully refresh, while the case itself weighs about 70 g. Currently, the case is available to purchase for $39.54 through AliExpress before factoring in shipping and taxes.
