Samsung Galaxy J5 2016
The Samsung Galaxy J5 2016 is an Android-based smartphone. The design of the smartphone looks quite similar to the Samsung Galaxy S5 except for the presence of the front-facing flash. The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow system features a 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 quad core processor, an Adreno 306 graphic card, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. The storage capacity can be expanded by 128 GB via the microSD slot. The smartphone's capacitive 5.2-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen is capable of displaying 1280 x 720 pixels. It features good colors, details and brightness. Other features of the smartphone include Dual SIM card support, a proximity sensor, an accelerometer and an ambient light sensor. The 13 MP rear camera features autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection and is able to record videos in 1080p resolution at 30 fps. The 5 MP front camera features a LED flash. The image quality of both cameras depends heavily on the lighting conditions. Too much lighting will make the images overexposed and too little lighting will make the images lose details. There are three different colors to choose from; Rose Gold, Gold, Black and White. It weighs 159 g and its battery life can last up to 13.5 hours.Specifications

Metalhead. Plastic before, metal now: The new edition of the Galaxy J5 aims to make a higher-quality impression. However, the inner values have remained mostly the same. Is that enough for a successful update? Update: new firmware with security and bug fixes released.

The third-gen Moto G just retains its place in our budget smartphone affections thanks to its classier looks and build quality as well as its clean version of Android and waterproofing. Even so, the J5 has a lot going for it and is a very good alternative if you want a better looking screen and a replaceable battery.

The Moto G series has been the gold standard in budget smartphones, but the Samsung Galaxy J5 is a great alternative thanks to its superlative screen and long lasting battery. It's an excellent choice for anyone who's looking for quality on a budget. Having said all that, it’s worth waiting for the new 2016 Moto G4 (the fourth generation Moto G) which is due any day now. Unless you need a cheap phone right away, it’s worth waiting to see if the now Lenovo-owned Motorola can continue its success streak.

Despite this, it’s clear that the Motorola Moto G4 is the phone to beat in the budget smartphone space right now. But that’s not to say there are no reasons to choose the Samsung Galaxy J5. It remains a good option if you value screen quality and battery life above all else. You might prefer it if you're switching across from another Samsung handset and don't fancy changing to a different manufacturer. And you might prefer a smaller handset; the Samsung Galaxy J5 is more compact, more easily usable in one hand and easier to slip into a pocket. Despite the emergence of the Moto G4, then, it hangs on to its Recommended award.

We are living in a world where sub-RM1000 smartphones are coming out with features taken from flagships that were around scantly a couple of years ago. This scenario has created phones such as the Honor 5X, Vivo X3, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Alcatel Flash Plus 2 and so on. Samsung has a tough road ahead to go against the pack with the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016), but we think they can do it - while breaking some sweat, especially for Samsung fans looking for an affordable metal frame Samsung phone.

As we wrap up the review, we can say that the Galaxy J5 (2016) is a well-built phone with decent specs. Although, a usual concern for most thrifty consumers is the pricing of the device. For something this underpowered yet encased in an above average body and topped with a vibrant display, the brand is asking for Php11,990. The official pricing may have put a frown on some but rest assured, it’s a pretty good handset with nifty features crafted for everyday use.

Make no mistake, with an asking price of RM799 for the J5 and RM999 for the J7, you're pretty much paying a premium for the Samsung brand instead of actual performance. If you're one of those people that wouldn't be caught dead with a phone that isn't from a well recognized international brand, the J5 and J7 can be considered. However, if the Samsung name doesn't mean all that much to you, then you should probably opt for one of the many entry/mid-level smartphones that come from brands located in mainland China.

The Samsung Galaxy J lineup proved yet again that affordability and reliability can coexist successfully. After Galaxy J7 and Galaxy J3 performed very well in our reviews, Galaxy J5 (2016) did not let us down, either. On the contrary, it has great features for the asking price. This is a model with nice design, thin profile and metal frame. It offers a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED HD display which is a very good choice both in terms of size and of image quality.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) is a smartphone of reasonably good quality. It looks elegant and its screen is fairly pleasant. Its software experience is well-accomplished and its camera can land surprisingly good shots. While the Galaxy J5 (2016) does cover the essentials, it does so with the absolute minimum amount of design flair and hardware power required. Priced at around $255 in Asia and €280 in Europe, it becomes easy prey for comparably priced alternatives that present better value for money.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) is not the smartphone you should buy. It is quite underpowered compared to other offerings in the market, doesn't have a fingerprint sensor, and its pros don't outweigh the cons. The compromise isn't worth Samsung's brand value.

As far as the design is concerned the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) lays a solid foundation for the company's upcoming mid-range smartphones. There'll be few people to complain as the phone looks better than its price tag suggests and is rocking top-notch build quality. However, in terms of hardware the Galaxy J5 (2016) feels like a pretty minor update. The bigger screen and battery are always a good way to lure customers in, but the chipset is feeling decidedly dated at this point. And the camera certainly can't live up to the promises that its specs make.

At this price, the Galaxy J5 is a very strong rival for the Moto G and other cut-price handsets. It's a solid all-rounder, offering dependable performance and excellent battery life as well as some brilliant camera tech. We prefer the vanilla Android Marshmallow experience of the Moto G, but Sammy fans will love what the Galaxy J5 has to offer.

It’s a shame to end on the slight downer of the camera because it’s the only area where the Samsung Galaxy J5 puts a foot wrong as far as I’m concerned. Usually, when I’ve reviewed a budget handset, I’m extremely eager to get back to my own phone, but in this instance, I’ll actually be a little sad to see the back of the J5. It’s smooth, stylish, and performs nicely with a bright screen and an incredible battery life. On one such day when I barely used the phone, it lost just 3% of its life from sitting in standby.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) Duos
A bar of soap or another elegantly designed phone: With the 3rd generation, the Galaxy J5 Samsung has somewhat improved on its design. Although it should be noted that the removable battery is no more. When compared to its previous generation the most noticeable difference is the chassis material. While Samsung melded aluminium and plastic in the past, they decided to go with an all aluminium design this time. This could add to its premium feel factor. In terms of specifications the Galaxy J5 sports a Samsung Exynos 7870 Octa core SoC, which might be disappointing to some people who had preferred the Snapdragon SoC from Qualcomm, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of internal storage. The storage capacity can be expanded via the microSD slot. While the specs may not seem impressive, it performs sufficiently well for its given price point considering its price. The Galaxy J5 is competing with the likes of the Huawei P10 lite, the Lenovo Moto G5 Plus or even the Sony Xperia XA1 now. Going back to the chassis, with the new all aluminium design Samsung was able to make sure that the camera is flush with the case unlike a certain fruity manufacturer. Actually, the the camera is slightly recessed which could help protect it from scratching its lens. Because of its aluminium chassis the Galaxy J5 is also quite sturdy and rigid, which means it should be less susceptible to flex. Overall the chassis is cleanly built with minimal gaps. However, the card tray seems to be made out of plastic for no apparent reason as to why Samsung chose to do this. In terms of software the Galaxy J5 is preloaded with Android 7.0 Nougat, which has a few customizations from Samsung such as the TouchWiz UI. As with most Samsung phones there are a few bloatware apps and even some Microsoft apps, which cannot be completely removed but only deactivated. Overall the UI remains smooth enough to function without being encumbered by unnecessary software. Even if in the modern age the phone function takes a back-seat due to chat apps like Whatsapp, Facebook or even Line the telephony function still remains relevant. However, the call quality seems to have taken a dip here with voices sounding a little dull on both ends with the occasional dropouts, suffice to say it still performs its function adequately. The Galaxy J5 is equipped with a rear and front facing 13 MP camera, which has improved and has a relatively high light sensitivity. However, it is disappointing that it only has a fixed focus. It should be noted that recordings are only decent if the lighting conditions are good and the subject does not move too fast. Nonetheless, the camera functions satisfactorily for its price. The Galaxy J5’s screen is able to handle up to 5 simultaneous inputs and is relatively smooth to the finger while gliding. Most phones in this price bracket have an integrated fingerprint reader. The Galaxy J5's fingerprint reader appears to be reliably good with an all-round responsiveness when it comes to unlocking the device. Jumping over to the Galaxy J5’s display there is not really much to be said other than the Super AMOLED display is very vibrant and sharp. However, at that size and resolution some users might want more since FHD options are already being offered by its competitors in this price range. Last on the checklist is none other than the Galaxy J5's battery life. While the 3000 mAh battery might seem anemic since it is smaller than the previous generation's, the power consumption has been improved. As a result, the Galaxy J5 lasts up to 12 hours 18 minutes on Wi-Fi, which is very impressive since is better than its predecessor despite slightly smaller battery. It seems like Samsung was able to produce a well-made budget device. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

All good things... With the update of its attractive Galaxy J series, we have the third generation of the J5 in our test. Samsung has radically changed the design and otherwise performs meaningful fine tuning. Fans of removable batteries will be disappointed, since the battery is now also built into the J5. Update: OTA update with bug fixes released.

Really quite an impressive low-cost smartphone with a lot of bang for your buck. Arguably one of the best budget handsets on the market thanks to Samsung's mastery of Super AMOLED display technology and some sterling battery performance, both of which put it ahead of rivals such as the Moto G, while in other areas it's quite comparable with that very capable handset. The trade-off, however, is that the Moto G does get stock Android and timely updates, while Samsung's Galaxy J5 has TouchWiz on-top and requires a bit of extra fettling between software versions.

The third-gen Moto G just retains its place in our budget smartphone affections thanks to its classier looks and build quality as well as its clean version of Android and waterproofing. Even so, the J5 has a lot going for it and is a very good alternative if you want a better looking screen and a replaceable battery.

Best in class of the budget Android category; you will struggle to find battery and display performance this good anywhere else at this price.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) brings many improvements compared to its successful predecessor and this makes it more than accomplished model. First of all, the device comes with an entirely metal design which is not always seen in this price range. There is a fingerprint sensor built in the hardware Home button. It is quite surprising that we don’t find a USB Type-C port but this is a drawback which can be ignored.

Samsung's alphabet soup is making less and less sense. Here we have the Galaxy J5 (2017) that's got a premium metal build, a frugal 14nm chipset, an excellent Super AMOLED display, and Samsung's latest software. How is that lower midrange?

Samsung Galaxy J5 Pro has 4G supported device with some mid-range features. The device is especially for Samsung lovers because other device lovers will have some issue with its price which is a little bit expensive compared to other smartphones.

It has one of the best interfaces around: sleek and modern-looking, it has Samsung’s excellent apps, and it has a very solid battery life. But its camera and, most importantly, performance are underwhelming. The phone often feels stuttery and the camera lacks in detail and speed. And we know the terrible state of Android updates for phones like the J5 (2017). In such a fiercely competitive market, the J5 (2017) does too little to stand out.

78.8%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
