Samsung is now selling the 990 EVO, the world's first SSD that can be connected via PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0. Suitable for modern devices that support the M.2 2280 standard, the Samsung 990 EVO is available for as little as $124.99 with a five-year warranty included.

Samsung has updated its 990 series with the 990 EVO, less than a month after the company briefly listed the SSD on its Ukrainian website. For reference, Samsung refers to the new SSD as 'SSD 990 EVO' and '990 EVO' in its press release. For the sake of brevity, we will use the latter, considering this is the version that appears most frequently on its website.

As expected, the 990 EVO offers PCIe 5.0 speeds at attractive pricing. Specifically, the 990 EVO starts at $124.99 in the US as a 1 TB drive. However, Samsung also sells a 2 TB option for $209.99. Please note that both capacities share peak 5,000 MB/s and 4,200 MB/s sequential read and write speeds. Likewise, Samsung advertises up to 800K IOPS (QD32) for both options.

Additionally, Samsung allows all 990 EVO SSDs to be connected either via PCIe 5.0 x2 or PCIe 4.0 x4 interfaces, albeit without any performance benefits either way. However, the 1 TB option is rated for a 600 TB lifespan, which doubles to 1,200 TB for its 2 TB counterpart. Nonetheless, Samsung provides a five-warranty with all units and identical 4 nm controller chips. Please see Samsung's website for more information.
