Rivian R1T, R1S software update to add YouTube, Google Cast support to infotainment screen
One of the best features of EVs is that vast improvements can be made to a car's overall experience and features via relatively quick over-the-air updates, as Rivian did last year with the R1T and R1S suspension tuning. This time, however, Rivian is focussing more on the in-cabin features, rather than the ride quality itself.
Rivian's upcoming OTA update for the R1 platform, which includes the R1T and R1S, will add both a YouTube app and support for Google Cast to the centre infotainment screen.
The update is part of a larger update to Google's Android Automotive OS, which saw a boost from announcements made at Google I/O 2024:
"Google Cast (formerly Chromecast built-in) is coming to cars with Android Automotive OS, starting with Rivian in the coming months. You can easily cast video content from your phone or tablet to the car, opening up even more entertainment options."
For obvious safety reasons, both features will only be available when the car is stopped, but the Google cast support should allow owners to mirror any Android app with cast support to the main infotainment screen.
If your car still doesn't have connectivity features like Rivian's new Google Cast support, check out the Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter on Amazon.
