Retroid Pocket 5: Specs, release date and launch pricing confirmed for new retro gaming handheld
The AYN Odin2 (curr. $449 on Amazon) may have a new challenger in town. While many powerful Android gaming handhelds exist now, the Odin2 remains the go-to for many reviewers on account of its powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, its decent pricing and its ready availability at least in the US. Although AYANEO and others have sought to challenge the Odin2 with various devices, they have missed the mark in one way or another.
Now, Retroid is preparing to usurp the Odin2 as the new go-to for Android handheld gaming. Specifically, it has finally confirmed full specifications, launch pricing and release date for the Pocket 5, which it has been teasing alongside the Pocket Mini throughout the last week or so. Incidentally, the company has also revealed similar details for the Pocket Mini, which we have covered separately.

In summary, the Pocket 5 combines a 5.5-inch and 1080p AMOLED display with a Snapdragon 865 chipset and a 5,000 mAh battery. Added to that, Retroid has now confirmed that the device will ship with 6 GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 128 GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage, plus a small active cooling solution to minimise thermal throttling and performance degradation. On top of that, the Pocket 5 will support Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 6 and 1080p/60 Hz video output via its USB Type-C port using the DisplayPort Alt Mode protocol.
Retroid will begin selling the Pocket 5 on September 10 at 01:00 UTC in four colour options that we have shown throughout. Despite showing the device priced at $219 its website, Retroid intends to offer the Pocket 5 at $199 for its first 24 hours and $209 throughout its pre-order phase. Please see Retroid's website for further details.
