Sales of desktops, workstations and notebooks in the Christmas quarter of 2023 fell to an all-time low. Around 67 million PCs were shipped worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Around 67 million PCs were shipped worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2023, corresponding to a decrease of 2.7% compared to the previous year. This makes Christmas sales in 2023 the weakest in 17 years, say market researchers from the IDC. Following the pandemic, demand for PCs remains weak and manufacturers will have to depend on extensive advertising campaigns in order to increase sales figures, according to the IDC.

Nevertheless, experts believe that the global PC market will recover in the coming years. However, the IDC predicts that the PC industry is unlikely to match the boom years of the pandemic in terms of sales of desktops, laptops and workstations.

According to the IDC analysis, the PC market has recorded unexpectedly sharp declines on an annual basis, reflecting a clear break with historical trends since 1995. In 2022, the delivery volume for PCs fell by a whopping 16.5% compared to the previous year. The IDC's preliminary results indicate a further decline of 13.9% in 2023 compared to 2022.

The ranking of the five largest PC manufacturers in the world remained the same in 2023: Lenovo is ahead of HP Inc, Dell, Apple and Asus. The IDC experts saw the biggest drop in sales for 2023 for Apple and Macs: down 22.4%. This is followed by Dell (-19.6%), Asus (-13.6%) and Lenovo (-13.2%). The IDC believes that only HP will be able to stem the decline in PC sales figures with a moderate -4.3%.

Ryan Reith, Group Vice President at the IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, believes that the PC market has seen the most fluctuation among the major technology categories in the last four years. Although PC shipments once again fell sharply in 2023, the expert also predicts positive momentum in the future of PCs. While AI is undoubtedly the focus, Reith also has high expectations for a strong year for the renewal of commercial PCs in 2024. Gaming PCs may also continue to contribute to market momentum.
