PC RAM supplies could shrink in 2027 as manufacturers prioritize memory for AI systems, potentially pushing consumer prices higher. Large PC makers have secured supplies through long-term contracts, potentially leaving DIY builders and upgraders facing a tighter retail market.

PC memory could become even harder to find in 2027, as manufacturers continue shifting production capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI accelerators and other memory products for data centers. Market research firm TrendForce expects the supply of DRAM for PCs to decline next year, potentially driving prices even higher for consumers.

The squeeze could hit DIY PC enthusiasts buying RAM separately particularly hard. Large PC manufacturers have secured supplies through long-term contracts, while retail memory brands could face tougher competition for the chips used in their modules.

Memory makers have been increasing output, but demand from AI infrastructure continues to absorb supplies. Major manufacturers Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron are prioritizing products for data centers, where demand remains strong. Micron has said overall memory supply has grown by 25 %, yet prices have continued to rise. Further production increases are expected to be more limited until a larger wave of factory openings and expansions begins coming online from 2029.

One major source of pressure is HBM, used alongside AI accelerators. Unlike conventional DDR memory, HBM requires more wafer capacity per usable gigabyte, leaving less manufacturing capacity available for standard DRAM. AI systems also compete for other types of memory used in consumer devices. Servers need DDR5, AI workstations use graphics memory, and compact AI PCs draw on the same types of LPDDR memory found in laptops.

Large PC manufacturers may be better protected from the shortage because they have secured supplies through long-term contracts with memory producers. More than 70 % of Samsung's PC RAM production is reportedly already committed under such agreements. Smaller system builders, memory-module brands, and retail buyers could face tighter availability as they compete for the remaining supply.

The supply outlook could put further upward pressure on prices. Some system integrators have already reported memory price increases of around 15 % early in the fourth quarter of 2026. TrendForce had previously forecast increases of 15 % to 20 % toward the end of the year. If PC DRAM availability tightens in 2027 while demand remains strong, consumers could face another difficult year for memory upgrades.

Delayed purchases could add pressure later. Businesses that postponed upgrades because of high prices may eventually need to replace or expand their systems, bringing demand back into a market with limited additional supply. Purchases deferred in 2026 could therefore add to demand in 2027 and 2028. For PC builders and upgraders, the result could be higher prices and fewer affordable memory options well into next year.
