The Origin EVO-16S is one of the few 16.1-inch laptops available, offering a great compromise between 15.6- and 17.3-inch models. It’s a good looking, sturdy laptop with a surprisingly good touchpad and decent LED keyboard. Gaming and multimedia performance is excellent, and you can play ray-traced games thanks to NVIDIA’s RTX GPUs. The only drawback is the battery life, but overall it’s a well-priced alternative to 15-inch laptops.

Ever wanted a gaming laptop but felt that a 17.3-inch display might be too big and a 15.6-inch display might be too small? Then this high-power 16.1-inch Origin PC EVO16-S should fit the bill.

Powerful enough to run anything at highest settings, surprisingly light and feature-rich, the Origin Evo16-S is ideal for gaming while on the go. It’s got its share of flaws – we couldn’t get that fingerprint reader to work, and the speakers are boxy sounding. But overall, this one’s a win for Origin.

Origin's high-end thin-and-light gamer, the EVO16-S, offers a unique 16.1-inch display and good performance for a laptop this size. It's a square alternative to mainstream offerings, even if it doesn't top them in any major way.

In the time since I received a review unit, Origin PC was acquired by Corsair. Now I can’t stop thinking about the kind of impact this might have on how Origin sources its laptop designs. Currently, Origin sources its laptop designs from an original design manufacturer (ODM), but I’d love to see what could happen if chassis design was done internally. Corsair’s ownership of Origin PC may not have any impact on product design, but if the EVO 16-S is any example, it would be better for everyone if that happened.

The Origin EVO16-S outperformed its competitors in many categories, even though it was also the worst in others, making this a particular product depending on your tastes. I would never recommend it to those obsessive about color depth and brightness, but the performance numbers on certain games are hard to ignore. It’s also hindered by mediocre speakers and an unbearably hot bottom while gaming, but alongside the solid battery life and impressive productivity performance, there’s plenty here worth your time. If you want a laptop at a similar price point that demolishes it in display vibrancy, we recommend checking out the MSI Crosshair 15.

The Origin EON 16SL is a 16-inch gaming laptop that combines a thin and light chassis, a great display with an unreal refresh rate of 240Hz, excellent performance with any demanding title, and even some really cool customization options to make it truly stand out.

The Origin EON16-S lands well as an all-around gaming laptop, finding an appealing balance of power, performance, and price with mostly modest weaknesses. The worst of them is the overly loud fans, which make the EON16-S potentially annoying to use within earshot of other people, while the screen and the keyboard could be better. But even with such drawbacks, this is still a capable pick for gaming on the go.

Capable of well-balanced performance across the board in a respectable if uninspired chassis, the Origin EON16-S is a decent gaming laptop. The value equation isn’t bad, either, but this laptop simply can’t hold a torch to the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8. Lenovo's laptop pretty much only fell behind when the Origin’s Samsung 990 Pro SSD comes into play, and that machine continues to hold our Editors' Choice award for midrange value.

It’s unfortunate that a laptop costing nearly $2,000 is what's required for great performance, but the EON16-S' handles it well. With superb 13th Generation Intel Core i9 processing power and solid RTX 4070 graphics bolstered by a quality display and speaker system, it’s shocking that Origin has gotten this laptop under $2,000. While our model was pushed over that price threshold due to additional SSD storage, that component is unnecessary for it to be as impressive as it is at this price. Even when factoring in the underwhelming plastic lid and base, uninspiring deck design, overwhelmingly loud fans and lacking display brightness, the EON16-S has a lot going for it. If you’re willing to spend quite a bit extra for a superbly powerful gaming laptop, we recommend the MSI Raider GE78 HX. Otherwise, the EON16-S is a great budget pick.
