A mechanical assistant that cleans, does laundry or serves food is a dream for many – but despite significant advances in robotics, it still feels far off. However, an announcement by Elon Musk has brought the idea of household robots a step closer to reality. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Tesla CEO said that the Optimus robot will be available to private customers starting in late 2027.
Optimus is already in use at Tesla factories, handling basic sorting and transport tasks. The second generation of the humanoid robot, unveiled in December, is lighter, faster and equipped with more dexterous hands. This makes it plausible that Optimus could take on more complex duties in the future – potentially even becoming useful in private homes. Elon Musk appears to share this view.
According to Musk, the Tesla robot will begin handling more complex tasks at the company’s car factories in 2026. Whether Optimus will actually enter homes by 2027, however, remains uncertain. Tesla has set strict safety requirements that must be met before that happens. As for pricing, it remains a matter of speculation. Tesla has previously said it is aiming for a price below $30,000.
On Reddit, Musk’s announcement has been met with skepticism. Few believe Optimus will actually be sold to private customers in 2027, pointing to past promises that never materialized – such as full self-driving, robotaxis or the new Roadster. Investors, however, appear more optimistic. Tesla’s stock has risen following the news.
