Oppo has announced the Air Glass, which is an assisted reality smart glass that works with Oppo smartphones and smartwatches. The Air Glass, which will be a China-exclusive for now, is powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC and uses a Spark Micro Projector with micro-LEDs to project information and notifications onto the sapphire crystal.

At its Inno Day 2021 event, Oppo unveiled the Air Glass — an "assisted reality" smart glass for everyone. The Air Glass sports a futuristic design and is based on Oppo's in-house developed Spark Micro Projector with micro-LEDs.

The Air Glass is a single-glass (monocle) powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC and weighs just about 30 g. Users can either wear the Air Glass by itself or attach it to their own eye glasses via magnets. The Spark Micro Projector is enclosed in a CNC enclosure with a sapphire glass lens module.

The five-lens projector with micro-LEDs throws the information using an optical waveguide onto a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The Air Glass shows information in both 16-level and 256-level grayscale options with a peak brightness of 1,400 nits.

The Air Glass can right now be paired only with Oppo smartphones running ColorsOS 11 (presumably, OnePlus phones as well) and Oppo smartwatches. Users can control features and notifications of the Air Glass using the Smart Glass phone or watch app. Apart from touch and voice commands, the Air Glass supports gestures as well — gently nodding the head can open a notification while a sideways shake can dismiss it. The sidebar is touch-sensitive and allows full notification preview and switching between apps.

Oppo said the Air Glass can offer features such as navigation with Baidu maps, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and a speaker along with dual-microphones. The company said that it is working to include teleprompter and live translation functionality soon. Thus, users can converse with others in a foreign language and the translation will be shown live right on the glass.

Currently, Oppo said that it is working on Chinese to English translation with support for Korean and Japanese coming soon.

The Air Glass will be available in Black and Silver frame colors in two different sizes with the Black variant coming in a full-frame design. Oppo plans to offer the Air Glass only in mainland China for now sometime in Q1 2022. Pricing information is not yet known.
