The Italian Data Protection Authority has announced it has fined OpenAI €15 million for several violations of EU's GDPR laws. The agency accused the ChatGPT maker of collecting personal information without any legal basis and found it guilty of not disclosing a security breach it had suffered in March 2023.
The watchdog also noted that OpenAI did not provide "mechanisms for age verification, with the consequent risk of exposing children under 13 to unsuitable responses to their degree of development and self-awareness."
The authority has ordered OpenAI to create a "six-month institutional communication campaign on radio, television, newspapers and the Internet" to "promote public understanding and awareness of the functioning of ChatGPT," and how it uses and collects data.
In a statement shared with Euro News, OpenAI said it found the decision "disproportionate" and plans to appeal. The spokesperson said the fine was "nearly 20 times" the revenue it made in Italy during the year.
