Official ChatGPT speaker said to move on its own, feature battery and camera

Rumors had already revealed the first details about OpenAI’s smart speaker in February, which is expected to hit the market in 2027 at prices ranging from $200 to $300. Now, Bloomberg has uncovered further details, according to which the product is expected to differ from speakers like the Amazon Echo Studio ($219 on Amazon) in two main areas.

First, OpenAI’s speaker is said to feature moving parts driven by motors, which are intended to make the speaker seem "more alive" when users interact with it. And second, the speaker is said to feature a voice assistant based on ChatGPT, which is intended to be far more personalized than, for example, Amazon Alexa. This is because the speaker is designed to get to know the user over time, even drawing on personal information such as emails. A camera and other sensors are designed to allow the speaker to perceive its surroundings.

The smart speaker is reportedly portable and equipped with a rechargeable battery, allowing it to be easily carried from room to room. In addition to the AI voice assistant, it will also support typical smart speaker functions, such as playing music or controlling smart home devices. The product is reportedly being developed with the support of Apple’s former head of design, Jonathan Ive, and is also benefiting from the expertise of more than 400 engineers whom OpenAI poached from Apple – a move Apple has already responded to with a lawsuit.
