ORICO: External SSD enclosure
ORICO is currently offering a fast, external enclosure for SSDs at a greatly reduced price. The model also comes with active cooling and thus should be able to protect the installed flash memory from damage.

ORICO is currently financing a particularly fast enclosure for SSDs as part of a Kickstarter campaign. Unsurprisingly, this supports SSDs in M.2 format, namely the M.2 2230, M.2 2242, M.2 2260 and M.2 2280 formats, as well as standard flash memory devices. The case itself measures 49.9 x 130.9 millimeters and is 14 millimeters thick.

The case can also be connected to a PC via Thunderbolt 4. The enclosure not only has an indicator LED, but also a small fan and the corresponding vents for fresh and exhaust air. This is intended to prevent the SSD from overheating - but even more relevant is the prevention of throttling and hence drops in the data transfer rate. Silicone-based thermal paste is also included. Waste heat should also be dissipated via the aluminum housing. The case allows the installed SSD to be seen.

The manufacturer also offers an M.2 2280 SSD and sets the maximum data transfer rate at up to over 7000 MB/s, so with the J20 PRO ORICO you should be able to achieve up to 7055 MB/s for reading and just under 6580 MB/s for writing. Of course, the connection to the PC or laptop must also support such a data transfer rate - in the external SSD enclosure, the SSD cannot utilize its performance reserves due to connection limitations.

In addition to the actual housing, the scope of delivery also includes a connecting cable with a length of 30 centimeters. The case can be pre-ordered on Kickstarter for a price of US$120, although the usual risks for crowdfunding campaigns apply. The package with the J20 PRO ORICO costs around US$230.

A possible alternative: ORICO M.2 enclosure with USB 3.2 via Amazon for US$24.99
