Still sporting a 7-year old GeForce GTX 880M gaming laptop? Nvidia has just announced that it will stop delivering security updates for its mobile Kepler-based GPU series in the next 12 months. Desktop Kepler GPUs, however, will not be affected.

Now that Turing is in full swing, Nvidia will begin cutting support for some of its older GPU families. If you still have any of these following laptop Kepler GPUs, then expect your last critical update to be on April 2020.

Note that all desktop Kepler GPUs, like the GeForce GTX 780 or GTX 660, will continue to be supported. Additionally, the above laptop Kepler GPUs will still receive Game Ready Driver updates for the time being. Even so, we encourage any Kepler owners out there to consider purchasing a Pascal-based laptop especially since prices for these systems have been steadily dropping.

The Nvidia Kepler architecture is three generations behind the current Turing architecture for consumer graphics cards. It focused heavily on improving performance-per-Watt and reducing heat output which the older Fermi architecture was lambasted for.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s. When I'm not managing day-to-day activities and US review articles on Notebookcheck, you can catch me following the eSports scene and the latest gaming news.
