Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 variant with GDDR6 VRAM reportedly in the works
With Nvidia's GeForce RTX 5000 graphics cards unlikely to arrive this year, its mid-range models could be delayed even further. To make matters worse, the GeForce RTX 40 series was rumoured to get a price hike due to the shortage of GDDR6X memory. However, Nvidia has other plans for its Ada Lovelace-based GPU, as confirmed by X leaker @Zed__Wang.
Nvidia is apparently prepping a GeForce RTX 4070 variant with 20 Gbps GDDR6 VRAM instead of GDDR6X with a PG141 347 PCB. That is only marginally slower than the 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory found on the regular RTX 4070, so the performance loss will be minimal. Whether or not it will come with a corresponding price reduction remains to be seen.
It is unclear if other RTX 4070 family SKUs, such as the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Ti Super will be affected by said GDDR6X memory shortage. Either way, if you're in the market for a mid-range graphics card, you're better off waiting until CES 2025 where AMD plans to unveil its next-gen Radeon GPUs that supposedly perform on par with RTX 4070 SKUs.
