Nokia has released a particularly eye-catching teaser via Twitter as of late. On first glance, it might seem normal enough, showing what seems to be an 8-series device in a case. However, it is scored with the legend suggesting that an upcoming sibling for this phone "will never need" such an accessory.
Accordingly, this hype-post has given rise to rumors that it pertains to a rugged phone called the Nokia XR20. Since then, the blog LokeNokia asserts that the OEM has shared a second image of this device's rear panel in more overt detail.
Admittedly, the putative XR20 has little in common with many toughphones already on the market: its backing might be made of polycarbonate rather than reinforced rubber or silicon. On the other hand, it is also depicted as capable of repelling water to some degree, thereby suggesting an advanced ingress-protection rating.
The allegedly official XR20 render also has dual rear cameras set in a squarish housing, thereby possibly confirming leaks pointing to 48MP (main) + 13MP (ultra wide angle) shooters, which might benefit from Nokia's partnership with Zeiss, moreover.
The "rugged Nokia" is also projected to be powered by the Snapdragon 480 SoC (thereby also possibly headed for the increasingly populous 'budget 5G' tier) and 6GB of RAM. It might have a 6.67-inch FHD+ 20.5:9 display of uncertain panel type and refresh rate, driven by an Android 11-based ROM and powered by a 4,630mAh battery.
Finally, the latest Nokia XR20 leak indicates USB type C charging and a 3.5mm jack. Such a phone just might debut during the HMD Global brand's next July 27, 2021 product event.
