Opinion | No, this is not the Xperia 9, if one even exists

Rumours about the possibility of Sony releasing an Xperia 9 have appeared online, with an image posted to Reddit cited as proof. Does that not sound dodgy enough?

Sony is apparently due to bring multiple devices to market this year, although the cancellation of MWC 2020 may have hampered the company's original plans. However, the above will not be one of them. Brought to our attention by GSMArena, the image has been doing the rounds online, and is cited as the first sighting of the Xperia 9.

The image appears to originate from Reddit, specifically u/XperiaZ15. This account has made, at the time of writing, one post and is yet to comment on anything. In short, all that there is to go on is a grainy image from a throwaway Reddit account. There is no link or any other evidence to verify this image.

If it was not obvious enough that this is a fake, then the image is essentially an Xperia L3 or Xperia 5 with some rudimentary photoshopping. Moreover, the wallpaper eerily resembles the background that Sony used for its MWC 2020 press invitation, also circulated by GSMArena.

So no, we have no reason to believe that this is the Xperia 9. There is no evidence to suggest that one exists, either.
