Nintendo's Switch topped PS4, Xbox One in the US market for 2018
Nintendo has hit the big time with the Switch by taking out the crown for the top-selling console in the US last year. A new report shows that it beat out both the Sony PlayStation 4, the reigning console king this generation, and the Xbox One. It’s a pretty extraordinary feat given that most pundits predicted the death of handheld gaming consoles following the rise of smartphone gaming.
However, as we know, the Switch has more than a few tricks up its sleeve, which includes the ability to be easily used as a docked console plugged into a TV, just like the PS4 and Xbox One. However, it can also be used as a handheld and can easily be set up for multiplayer gaming on the go as well. Add to that mix a potent range of AAA gaming titles and Nintendo as come from well behind following the lackluster sales of the Wii U to ensure that it is game on for the next generation of consoles just around the corner.
The best-selling game of 2018 went to Red Dead Redemption 2,while Black Ops 4 and NBA 2K19 picked up second and third place. Nintendo’s own Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the fifth best-selling title given. Given that the Switch was released well into the life cycle of both the PS4 and Xbox One shows that its rise to the top has been rapid. Interestingly, as has often been the case with Nintendo consoles, it is the least powerful of the trio, but is flexibility is unmatched.
