New tactical team-based shooter climbs Steam charts with 90% "Very Positive" reviews

After over a year of public playtesting, Over The Top: WWI has officially launched on Steam with a $19.14 price tag. Developed by Flying Squirrel Entertainment, this tactical shooter supports 100 vs. 100 PvP battles in realistic and fully destructible WWI maps.
The game centers on massive, 200-player lobbies where survival depends more on positioning and strategy than on raw aim. Its standout mechanic is a "Total Annihilation" system that allows players to physically reshape the battlefield. Using shovels and pickaxes, engineers can dig zig-zagging trench lines to break enemy sightlines, while heavy artillery fire carves permanent craters into the terrain for new cover.
Players choose from eight roles, with officers playing a vital role by calling in poison gas, smoke screens, and creeping barrages. Unlike standard run-and-gun games, Over The Top: WWI supports friendly fire, which means officers have to be careful with airstrikes to avoid hitting their teammates.
The gunplay is intentional, with over 50 historical weapons — including rifles, mortars, and heavy cannons. The battles take place across 12 historically accurate battlefields. The game also allows for custom servers, maps, rules, and settings.
Since its release on March 6, Over The Top: WWI has attracted many positive reviews, with many praising it for its fully customizable terrain and great gunplay. However, critics have pointed out that the game feels repetitive, with defeated players respawning rather quickly, which encourages players to play more recklessly.
As for reception, Over The Top: WWI has received about 2,200 reviews on Steam since launch, with 91% of these reviews being positive. It is also currently trending on Steam, earning it a place on Steam's New & Trending chart and a peak concurrent player count of 5,523.
It is currently available for $16.26, thanks to a 15% off launch discount. Currently, it has full audio support only for English, with interface support for 17 other languages.
