Apple’s next-generation iPhone 12 range will include OLED panels across all four Pro and non-Pro models, but there will be key differences. According to @EveryApplePro and @mweinbach, the 120 Hz ProMotion high refresh rate technology will be a key differentiator on the Pro models.

Apple’s next-generation iPhone 12 range will be the first time we see the company bring OLED panels across the entire range of what is tipped to be four iPhone 12 models. These will come in three sizes: a non-Pro 5.4-inch model; a non-Pro 6.1-inch model; a Pro 6.1-inch model and a Pro 6.7-inch model. According to @EveryApplePro and XDA’s @mweinbach, we now know that a key differentiator for the latter two Pro models will be a high refresh rate.

High display refresh rates have become a hallmark of flagship Android smartphones over the past 12 to 18 months and Apple is finally jumping on the bandwagon. Ironically, of course, it was Apple that actually started the trend by bringing 120 Hz display refresh rates to the LCD-based iPad Pro line in 2017. However, this was the year Apple introduced the iPhone X, its first smartphone with an OLED panel and high refresh rate OLED panels weren’t ready for the mass market. Things have since changed, as we well know.

In other key tidbits to emerge from the latest iPhone 12 spec leak is that to help power the high display refresh rate (even though it will use variable refresh rates to save battery like the iPad Pro), the new iPhone 12 Pro models will get a larger battery – possibly as large as 4,400 mAH.  Apple may use a black out lens filter that won’t affect camera performance but could help it integrate the look of the LiDAR scanner. Low light photography will continue to improve with Apple’s engineers working hard to improve Night Mode as well as slow-motion video capture in the dark.
