Lucid was first to pierce through the 500-mile range barrier with its Air GT model that covered more than 513 miles on a single charge of its 118 kWh battery.
It has now set the ultimate real-life world record for the longest electric car range on a charge with its Air Grand Touring model, and the achievement has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Despite having a slightly smaller, 112 kWh battery, the ultraefficient drivetrain of the Air Grand Touring managed to drive nearly 750 miles before the battery pack gave up the ghost.
Lucid took advantage of the denivelation between the mountainous St. Moritz in Switzerland and Munich in Germany to set this hypermileage achievement. The roughly 4,200-feet difference in sea levels between the beginning and end point of the trip certainly contributed, but the overall incline is not all that significant to have affected the 749 miles (1,205 kilometers) range on a charge in a substantive manner.
Lucid prides itself in engineering some of the lightest, most energy-efficient EV powertrains out there that have set a record with 5 miles/kWh power consumption. Its newer vehicles like the Gravity SUV carry a NACS charging connector, too, so that they can be topped up with the Tesla 48A Wall Connector directly. The Air Grand Touring is Lucid's longest-range vehicle, certified for 512 miles on the rigorous EPA testing cycle.
In ideal conditions, however, Lucid's powertrain efficiency goes well above the 5 miles/kWh record, and the Air Grand Touring covered the whopping 6.68 miles per kWh of the 112 kWh battery pack by going slightly downhill throughout the distance. It would be interesting to cover the same trip back to see what difference that would make in the overall range on a charge.
This way, however, Lucid managed to beat the previous Guinness world record by nearly 100 miles, demonstrating again that it makes some of the most premium and well-engineered electric vehicles out there, with a price tag to match.
