BYD is taking fast charging of electric vehicles to a new level with its Super E-Platform. The new 1,000-volt architecture reportedly enables charging power of up to 1,000 kW, which is enough to recharge up to 400 kilometers of range in five minutes. The first models to feature this technology are the Han L and Tang L.

Chinese manufacturer BYD has just unveiled its "Super E-Platform 3.0 Evo", a comprehensively redesigned electric car architecture that is set to raise the bar in the field of fast charging. At its heart is a 1,000-volt system that allows currents of up to 1,000 amps - a theoretical charging capacity of up to 1,000 kW. According to electrek, this system can recharge up to 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes under optimal conditions. Given the appropriate charging infrastructure, this would significantly exceed the current industry standard.

Platform for extreme performance

The new platform comprises a newly developed powertrain with silicon carbide inverters, a 1,000-volt battery pack and a highly efficient "hairpin" electric motor that, according to BYD, reaches up to 30,000 rpm – a value previously unattainable in series production. These motor speeds are usually only seen in motorsports or prototypes. The platform was developed with a focus on maximum energy efficiency and allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under two seconds.

Premiere in the Han L and Tang L

The new technology will initially be installed in two models: the sporty Han L sedan with up to 800 hp and the large Tang L SUV with a maximum of 650 hp. Both models are aimed at the premium segment and are intended to demonstrate the potential of BYD's in-house technology development.

High-current charging with a new connector system

A key feature is the newly developed 1,000-ampere charging module, which is supported by a specially tuned temperature management system. To transmit the high currents, BYD uses a multi-pin connector system designed to minimize contact losses and thermal problems. Despite the extreme charging power, BYD highlights the system's suitability for everyday use and low maintenance requirements.

Global market launch still unclear

Whether and when vehicles with the Super E-Platform will also be offered outside China is currently unclear. In view of the growing competition in the field of high-performance electric vehicles – for example from Porsche, Tesla, or Lucid - an early export launch cannot be ruled out.
