Guild Wars: Reforged modernizes the 2005 MMO classic with an official Steam launch, Deck Verified status, controller support and multiple QoL upgrades. It bundles all campaigns into a no-sub $20 package, if you like tactical, build-driven instanced play.

Guild Wars: Reforged brings the original 2005 MMO back into the spotlight with a modernization pass, Steam launch and controller-first support that looks to be aimed squarely at lapsed fans and those who are "MMO-curious" on PC and handhelds.

Guild Wars: Reforged is a reworked edition of the original Guild Wars. It bundles the full Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns, plus eight character slots, into a single, no‑subscription package. Structurally, it is still a hub‑based online RPG: players gather in social outposts and towns, then venture into fully instanced story missions and explorable areas, solo with AI heroes or in parties of up to eight. Combat is classic tab‑target MMO with hard‑limited eight‑skill bars, ten professions and thousands of skills, where build‑crafting is usually prioritized over gear grind.

Reforged is more about under‑the‑hood upgrades rather than new content. Key additions include Steam Deck Verified status, native XInput controller support, HD UI elements, larger text options, new quest‑direction tools and updated graphics features like ambient occlusion, HD bloom, antialiasing and modern audio. Existing owners of Guild Wars get the Reforged client free, while new players have to buy in once and can play without ongoing fees.

Guild Wars: Reforged launched on Steam on 3 December 2025 and quickly hit Steam’s "New & Trending" and "Top Selling" charts as returning players spiked the current player-base into the mid‑thousands. The game is priced at $19.99 on Steam. As far as reviews and hands‑on impressions go, performance is stable even on modest hardware, with the main complaint being that - visual upgrades aside - it still looks and structurally feels like a mid‑2000s MMO.

As mentioned earlier, Reforged is Steam Deck (curr. $820 on Amazon for the 1TB/OLED variant) verified and widely praised for its controller scheme, which uses cues from Final Fantasy XIV’s trigger‑based hotbar layout and should work well across PC handhelds. Compared with modern peers, it's closer to older, more tactical MMOs like classic Guild Wars 2, early Warframe hub‑and‑instance loops and CRPG‑adjacent online RPGs than to open‑world, hotbar‑sprawl games modelled after World of Warcraft.
