Big battery at a good price. Motorola's latest iteration of its G-series includes the mid-range Moto G6 Play smartphone at a price of around $200. With its 13 MP camera and its Snapdragon SoC it seems to be positioned fairly competitively. Let us find out how well it did in our test.
Motorola Moto G6 Play review

If we didn’t spend as much time as we do with annual flagships, we’d have zero problems picking up a Motorola G series phone once a year. When we look ourselves in the mirror and are brutally honest we can admit that the G6 Play is a great benchmark device. Not in the sense of scoring and ranking, mind you, but in the “this is all I need at this time” sense.

Overall the experience on the G6 Play is solid thanks to Moti’s uncluttered Android skin that barely changes anything from stock. Notably, there are fewer camera features on the phone compared to the G6 and G6 Plus thanks to the lack of dual rear cameras.

Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play review: The best cheap Android phones you can buy
Source: Android Authority English Archive.org version
You're not going to find a better, more premium-looking phone at this price than the Moto G6. No, the camera isn't great (and neither is Motorola's software update track record), but everything else is. The build is fantastic, the software is a joy to use, and it's compatible with all the major carriers in the States. It's the best smartphone you can buy for under $250, hands down.

Are the upgrades worth £50? Yes, easily. However, that the range caters for those who want to spend under £200 is important. And if battery life is your primary concern, the Play is actually a better choice than its higher-end brothers.

Still, the Moto G6 Play stands uncontested in battery life, and the ultra-clean Android software is a nice bonus. If you're working with $200, go ahead and pull the trigger on the G6 Play — you won't be disappointed.

75% Moto G6, G6 Play, And G6 Plus Review: I Can’T Believe Budget Phones Are This Good
Source: The Verge English Archive.org version
The standard G6 really does strike the best balance here. And for $250, it’s hard to complain about the shortcomings it does have. If anything, it’s given me more reason to complain about the flaws on my $649 phone. As the quality gap between high- and low-end smartphones continues to shrink, the price between them seems to be growing bigger. For people who usually buy top-of-the-line phones, that’s bad news. But if you’re shopping under $300, Motorola makes it feel like there’s very little you’re missing out on.

The Moto G6 Play looks great, is built well, and is easy to use with one hand. The battery life is above average and the software package is fluid and has a few useful customisations. However, the cameras are average, performance is sub-par, and the display is nothing to write home about.

Moto G6 Play review: All the battery, none of the expense
Source: Pocket Lint English Archive.org version
The G6 Play offers a whole lot of goodness for its modest asking price. Its real win is battery life, which goes on and on. However, such capacity seems at odds with its limited power credentials. That's the main qualm we have with the Play: there's the 'regular' G6 and larger G6 Plus, both of which are more logical purchases, despite their increased asking prices.

Despite the few minor issues we found with the Moto G6 Play, it definitely won't steer you wrong. It's a dependable phone with a nice feature set. However, in this price range you can (and should!) get hardware that provides hiccup-free performance. So if you shop around a bit, there is more value to be had elsewhere. We hope Lenovo sorts things out with the Moto G6 Play performance, otherwise as things stand right now, it's hard for it to get the recommendation it deserves.

Moto G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play hands-on review

Surprisingly, the Moto G6 Play is no major downgrade as well. Despite a different bill of materials, Motorola managed to preserve the styling mostly intact, in no small part, thanks to a 5.7-inch, Max View display, on the cheap. Plus, the Play manages to bring a treat of its own to the table, namely a large 4,000 mAh battery pack. Also, an on-screen navigation setup, with a fingerprint reader around back - a throwback to Moto G phones of yore.

Qualcomm Adreno 505: Mid range graphics card integrated in the Snapdragon 430 and 435 SoCs. Based on the 500 generation and supports modern standards like Vulkan 1.0, OpenGL ES 3.1 + AE, OpenCL 2.0 and DirectX 12.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

430: Lower mainstream octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 SoC clocked at up to 1.4 GHz and the Adreno 505 GPU, a DDR3L-1600 memory controller as well as an X6 LTE (Cat. 4) modem.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

5.70":

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Motorola: Founded in 1928, the US-based company mainly focuses on communication technology such as smartphones. The original company Motorola Inc was split up in 2011. Motorola Mobility got the smartphone division and was taken over by Google in 2012 and Lenovo in 2014.

The company is known for its cell phones and other electronic devices such as smartwatches, tablets and accessories. Motorola was one of the first companies to produce cell phones, and in recent years has also innovated in the areas of 5G technology and modular smartphones (Moto Mods). Motorola is also active in public safety and professional communications, providing solutions for government agencies, businesses and other organizations. The company has operations in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide.

79.63%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
