Reviews for the Motorola Moto G Play 2023

Moto G Play (2023) Review: Low Price, Lots of Compromises
Source: CNet English
Even when you're looking for the cheapest possible phone, your device still needs to run most apps without issue and take decent-looking photos. I wouldn't expect a phone that costs less than $200 to run Fortnite at the highest graphics settings, but I am expecting to use apps with minimal lag. While phones at this price are also typically lighter on features, the perks that are available should bring noticeable value to the experience. The Moto G Play's Portrait mode and high refresh rate don't succeed in this regard. Instead of buying the Moto G Play at $170, you're probably better off saving $10 and getting the $160 Samsung Galaxy A03S. While that phone also has unimpressive cameras, it was at least able to multitask more easily. Although I haven't reviewed it yet, you might also consider the $199 Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, since it has 64GB of storage and 5G connectivity. Later this year, a number of TCL 40 phones will arrive in the US, which will include 5G and 128GB of storage for under $200. Those devices might be worth waiting for if you aren't in dire need of a cheap phone right now.

62% Motorola Moto G Play (2023) Review: you can probably do better
Source: Phone Arena English
Given the alternatives that are available for just a few more dollars, it is quite hard to recommend the Motorola Moto G Play (2023). It has some great things going for it, but most of them are ruined by the extremely slow processing power which prevents the phone from delivering the bare minimum when it comes to a smooth and uninterrupted user experience. If you can overlook this major setback with the new Moto G Play, then all the good it offers might still be of worth to you. Otherwise, you are probably better off shifting your attention to something else around the $200 mark.

40% Moto G Play (2023) review: A budget phone bust
Source: Tom's Guide English
Motorola has carved out a big slice of the cheap phone market for itself, with the Moto G Play (2023) the latest to join the mix. You can get this handset for just $169, which is a bargain. But to arrive at such a low cost, Motorola had to make some major compromises. That’s led to a phone which is near impossible to use thanks to its sluggishness. The Moto G Play display lacks anything notable besides a 90Hz refresh rate — a feature that I’m glad to see — while the camera produces lifeless images that you’ll immediately want to trash. Couple that with the fact that this handset ships with Android 12, and will only get Android 13, and you have a device that I can’t recommend, not even for bargain hunters. You get what you pay for, and as you’ll see in this Moto G Play (2023) review, your $169 doesn’t get you much.

30% Moto G Play (2023) review: Wasn't worth the wait
Source: Android Central English
Motorola starts off the year with a questionable smartphone launch. After skipping a year of the Moto G Play lineup, the latest model offers meager upgrades over its predecessor while suffering through major performance problems. That said, there are some nice qualities, but they're not really enough to make up for the downsides of using this phone.

Motorola Moto G Play (2023) review: Limited reach
Source: Android Authority English
Nobody ever said that making a great budget-friendly Android phone would be easy. Really, it probably gets tougher as premium features try to work their way down and brands try to nail specific price points. Unfortunately, the Motorola Moto G Play (2023) is stuck in that squeeze. Many of its features worked well in 2021 with the last G Play model, but they don’t all keep up in 2023. Sure, it still has a headphone jack, a battery that lasts and lasts, and the light, smooth My UX skin, but that doesn’t feel like enough. The Mediatek Helio G37 lacks any punch, the charging leaves you tethered to the wall for hours, and there’s no sign of NFC or 5G on the horizon. Of course, we have to remember that this is one of the most affordable Android devices on the market at just $170, but the tide is rising around Motorola.

70% Motorola Moto G Play (2023) Review
Source: PC Mag English
If there's one significant bit of praise we can throw at the Motorola Moto G Play, it's that it's ridiculously affordable. It's not a fast, high-performing phone, but when you consider how inexpensive it is, it's easy to overlook some of its shortcomings. The main issue is that you can get a 5G phone for as little as $30 more. And if you don't care about 5G, you can get better camera quality and longer battery life from the Moto G Power for the same price, or better performance across the board and 5G with the $228 OnePlus Nord N300.

40% Moto G Play (2023) review: no fun here
Source: Digital Trends English
Even though it’s super affordable at $170, I simply cannot recommend the Moto G Play (2023). It’s baffling for a phone to come out in 2023 with a chip that is already over two years old, and it really does affect the overall performance of the phone. During my testing, I found it frustrating with the constant lag, stuttering, and frame rate drops when doing simple tasks. Even though it has an HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate, that doesn’t mean much when almost everything looks and feels choppy. I also don’t understand how a phone can launch in 2023 with only 32GB of internal storage, with almost half of that taken up by the operating system, so you don’t even get the full 32GB. Even the other budget phone I recently reviewed, the OnePlus Nord N300, has 64GB of storage — double what the Moto G Play (2023) offers, and for just $50 more. And though I love having a large 5,000mAh battery, I’m puzzled by the decision to have it only support up to 10W fast charging. Again, the OnePlus Nord N300 also has the same size battery, but it can support charging speeds of up to 33W. It even has 5G support, which is also lacking on the G Play. Even as a cheap backup phone, I’d skip this one, especially when you can just pick up a flip phone for less. The money you could use for the Moto G Play (2023) is better put toward something else, like a OnePlus Nord N300, Nokia G20 or G50, and even the new Samsung Galaxy A14. Budget phones have gotten really good in recent years, but unfortunately, the Moto G Play (2023) isn’t one of them.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
