Of late, Motorola has been one of the first OEMs to adopt the latest high-end hardware from Qualcomm and Samsung. Its upcoming flagship, the Motorola Edge X40, is expected to follow suit and launch as one of the first smartphones to run a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. More specifications of the device have now been listed on the Chinese Telecom Equipment Terminal website.
The listing shows two different batteries for the Motorola Edge X40, one with a 5,000 mAh capacity and the other with 4,500 mAh. It suggests there could be two variants of the smartphone in the works, but it is too early to tell how they'll differ from each other. The 4,500 mAh battery-toting variant will likely support a higher charging wattage. Motorola could also mimic the Edge X30 and launch one version of the Edge X40 with an under-display selfie camera. Unfortunately, the selfie camera's megapixel count isn't specified, so it's hard to tell what Motorola has planned on that front.
Moving on to the rear cameras, the Motorola Edge X40 will pack three sensors, 50 MP + 50 MP + 12 MP. The first two are almost certainly wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses. The 12 MP sensor seems to be a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. That would make for a remarkable quality-of-life upgrade over the Edge X30, which came with a sub-par 2 MP macro/depth sensor. The lack of a 200 MP lens isn't surprising; Motorola has probably reserved it for a higher-tier device.
Other Motorola Edge X40 specs include up to 18 GB of system memory and a 1,080 x 2,400 OLED screen. Internal storage caps out at 512 GB and the listing confirms that it is not expandable. Its refresh rate is said to be set at 165 Hz, putting the phone on equal footing with gaming behemoths like the Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate.
That, combined with the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, could make the Motorola Edge X40 a formidable gaming smartphone. However, global audiences may have to wait until January or February 2023 before they can get their hands on the Motorola Edge X40, which will very likely launch worldwide as the Motorola Edge 40 Pro.
