While Paint 11.2410.28.0 gets generative fill and erase, an improved model for Cocreator, and an updated Image Creator, Notepad 11.2410.15.0 comes with AI-assisted content rewriting. Currently, only Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11 in select markets can access these features.

Thanks to AI, basic Windows 11 apps such as Paint and Notepad are becoming more potent, providing both image and text editing capabilities that remain easy to use but manage to accomplish tasks once reserved to professionals. For now, the only problem remains their availability, because Windows 10 is not going to receive them anytime soon (most likely never), and Windows 11 users who are not receiving the updates for Windows Insiders should also wait for a while.

According to Dave Grohocki, the updates that bring new powers to Paint and Notepad are rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11. Depending on the feature in question, the availability could be limited to Windows Insiders in certain markets. These are the highlights mentioned by the Windows Inbox Apps Principal Group Product Manager:

  • Generative fill, which allows quick image edits and additions "with just a few words" thanks to AI assistance.
  • Generative erase, which uses AI to fill the background after removing a certain object from an image.
  • The updated Cocreator model, only available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs for the time being, is tuned to deliver better and faster results.
  • Image Creator in Paint is now available in preview to Windows 11 users in the United States, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. In this case, a Microsoft account is required. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family and Copilot Pro subscribers located in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand can use AI credits to access Image Creator in Paint.
  • Notepad now allows the user to easily change the length of a text, rephrase, or adjust the tone with the help of generative AI. The Rewrite feature is available in the same regions and under the same terms as mentioned above.

The new app versions are 11.2410.15.0 (Notepad) and 11.2410.28.0 (Paint). In addition to all the above, it should also be mentioned that, according to Microsoft, Notepad will launch by up to 55% faster for most users.
