Orico’s two new NAS devices are supposed to stand out with built-in AI features and a sleek metal case that still allows quick drive access thanks to a magnetic front cover.

The new Orico MetaBox HS series is available with either two or five drive bays. Aside from that, the HS200 and HS500 are essentially identical. The heavily rounded aluminum case gives the NAS a modern look. Meanwhile, the front panel is magnetic and can be removed easily to access the two or five 3.5-inch drive trays, depending on the configuration.

Both NAS also come with two M.2 slots for SSDs which allows for expansions with up to 16TB of flash storage. Opening the cover on the underside reveals the aforementioned M.2 slots and two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, so the memory can be upgraded later on. Depending on the use case, this might be necessary, since the HS200 ships with just 4GB RAM, while the HS500 comes with 8GB. Up to 32GB are supported, but these RAM kits are currently very expensive on Amazon due to the ongoing shortage.

32GB eMMC storage for the operating system are on board as well. Orico’s in-house "CyberData OS" includes a range of backup tools and software for setting up a media server and an AI-enabled photo management feature. The NAS is powered by an Intel Celeron N5105, which is a power-efficient quad-core processor from 2021 with boost clocks of up to 2.9GHz.

Price and availability

The Orico MetaBox NAS series is available now at the manufacturer’s online store. The HS200 MetaBox with 4GB RAM and two drive bays costs $349, while Orico lists the HS500 MetaBox with 8GB RAM and space for five drives at $419. Orico also ships to Europe, in which case additional shipping and import fees may apply.
