MediaTek has reportedly joined forces with Nvidia to develop mobile GPUs for smartphones. One could get to see it in action as early as 2024 alongside the Dimensity 9400.

Yesterday (15/5/2023), details about an unnamed MediaTek SoC with four high-performance Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 cores emerged online. Some speculate it is the Dimensity 9300, while others insist it is a laptop SKU. Unfortunately, there is very little information to draw any meaningful conclusions. Meanwhile, there is some delightful news on the MediaTek mobile AP front.

A report from DigiTimes says MediaTek plans to integrate Nvidia GPUs into its smartphone SoCs "as early as 2024". Therefore, one can reasonably assume the GPU to debut alongside the Dimensity 9400 (tentative). The collaboration will also extend to laptop/tablet chips sometime down the line. It isn't surprising, given MediaTek's plans to include Nvidia-made AI chips into its smartphone APs.

Furthermore, MediaTek has already shown off the potential for raytracing-enabled Chromebooks by running a GeForce RTX 3060 alongside its Kompanio 1200 tablet SoC. Ada Lovelace has emerged to be one of Nvidia's more power-efficient architectures, and it'll be interesting to see how it operates under a strict power budget.

MediaTek and Nvidia's offering could potentially give Qualcomm's Adreno-based GPUs a run for their money. AI upscaling features such as DLSS will be essential for MediaTek to compete against Qualcomm's newly announced Snapdragon Super Game Resolution. AMD and Samsung may have to step up their game with their RDNA-based mobile GPUs.
