MediaTek Dimensity 9300 allegedly mimics Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with two Cortex-X4 Prime cores

Some time ago, Twitter leaker @tech_reve correctly predicted that MediaTek would launch the Dimennsity 9200+ in May 2023. Shortly after, the chipmaker unveiled the mid-cycle refresh on May 10. Now, the same source has some new information about its successor, the Dimensity 9300, which is slated for an October 2023 launch.

MediaTek's upcoming flagship will launch with two Cortex-X4, four Cortex-A7xx and two Cortex-A5xx cores in a 2+4+2 configuration. Unfortunately, the report doesn't specify either cluster's clock speeds or if the Dimensity 9300 will use Arm's newest Cortex-A cores. Its GPU is a mystery, too, but it would be reasonable to see an Immortalis G715 successor (Arm Immortalis G720?) there.

If the aforementioned information is accurate, MediaTek is tearing a page out of Qualcomm's playbook. An earlier leak said the Snapdragon Gen 3 would launch with two variants, one with a 1+5+2 CPU core layout and the other with 2+4+2. Furthermore, both APs are set to be manufactured on TSMC's cutting-edge N4P node, effectively putting them on a level playing field.

It'll be interesting to see how MediaTek handles thermals on the Dimensity 9300. Two Cortex-X4 cores mean a lot of extra heat, and MediaTek may have to play around with clocks to keep power consumption low. Furthermore, it will also need a uarch redesign to assign workloads among its two Prime cores optimally. Like its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300 is expected to debut alongside the Vivo X100 series in late 2023.
