MediaTek Dimensity 9300: Next-gen flagship SoC could pack four Cortex-X4 cores and consume 50% lesser power than the Dimensity 9200

A previous leak suggested MediaTek's upcoming flagship mobile SoC, the Dimensity 9300, would use two Cortex-X3 cores alongside four Cortex-A720s and two Cortex-A520s. A subsequent rumour talked about a MediaTek chip with four Cortex-X4 and four Cortex A720 cores. It turns out the latter could end up as the Dimensity 9300.

Multiple leakers, @Tech_Reve from Twitter, Ice Universe and Digital Chat Station from Weibo, agree that the four Cortex-X7 toting behemoth is not a laptop chip. It was initially assumed to be one due to its potentially high power draw. However, Arm showed off its new CPU cores at Computex 2023 and claimed the Cortex-X4 is up to 15% faster than its predecessor while consuming 40% less power.

Both leakers further add the Dimensity 9300 is 50% more power efficient than its predecessor. Digital Chat Station claims its performance surpasses the Apple A17 Bionic, a claim best treated with scepticism. It is, after all, manufactured on TSMC's cutting-edge N3B node, while the Dimensity 9300 is still on N4P. That said, the node advantage might not amount to much, if a past speculation about the A17 Bionic's performance is accurate.

Nevertheless, if the Dimensity 9300 specs mentioned above are accurate, it could easily best Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which could launch either in a 1+5+3 or 2+4+2 configuration. However, its Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU might not have enough firepower to take on its Adreno-based counterpart. And it's not like the situation will improve anytime soon, as Nvidia GPUs aren't scheduled to feature in MediaTek mobile SoCs anytime soon. Nevertheless, we could see them in action alongside its automotive products though.
