Although by no means a top performer, the Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 processor and 2GB of DDR2 Ram provide a stable base for this 17in notebook. And with the Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS graphics card, it’s powerful enough for the demands of both the Aero Glass interface used by the supplied Vista Home Premium and for playing DVDs. But this graphics card isn’t exactly high end and gamers will find it leaves something to be desired, particularly for recent games with high levels of detail. A powerful computer but the poor keyboard makes typing a problem

Although many technology products get smaller by the year, some notebook computers defy this slimming process by getting bigger, in order to give their desktop cousins a run for their money. The EX700 is a good-looking notebook with impressive features for people who want an all-round multimedia computer

As well as the 17" widescreen display for movies and home entertainment, the MSI EX700 also features HDMI output, which increasingly essential for the home laptop. You also get VGA output, a firewire connection and an SD/MS/MMC slot on the front along with 3 USB ports which is essential for those USB extras for the home desktop. Its power as a home entertainer makes up somewhat for it's impotency as a work based machine. Carrying this 3.4KG monster from the office up the hill to my home was enough to persuade me that the MSI EX700 would sit permanently on the desk. The inclusion of a numeric keypad- something I have never missed on a laptop- has made the rest of the keyboard cramped. Bizarrely a casualty of this is the full stop button, which is so small a magnifying glass was needed to identify it.

The EX620 is the latest addition to MSI's Entertainment Series of notebooks and features a 16-inch widescreen display, Core 2 Duo processor, discrete ATI graphics and a host of other goodies for your multimedia pleasure. MSI's EX620 is a nicely designed notebook, stuffed full of multimedia features with a very keen price tag. It has all the performance you'll need for everyday use, but it is let down somewhat by its keyboard.

For potential buyers of MSI EX620, the most important question that they should ask themselves is: what are your needs and what are you going to use this notebook for? Actually this is the question you should ask yourself before purchase of any notebook. Detail that we didn’t like on this model is soft keyboard that bends during intensive typing. All the rest is top quality and top speed. Price for tested MSI EX620X-04EU is little bit higher compared to similar notebooks. This is above all, consequence of Blue-ray reader that is included in the package. If you do like this model but you don’t need Blue-ray reader you can go for EX620X-052EU model that has similar configuration (slightly smaller hard disk and no Blue-ray) and spare 150€.

A well-specified and feature-packed HD compatible laptop, but performance is low. In recent months, many manufacturers have released true-widescreen laptops to great acclaim. MSI is the latest to follow suit with the EX620-207UK, but while its screen and specification are strong, it fails to truly impress. While the limited performance, mobility and usability of the MSI prevent it being an essential purchase, its HD features and vibrant screen even the balance somewhat. If you're in the market for an affordable HD laptop, you could do worse than give the EX620 a test run.

Amidst the prevalence and success of MSI's Wind netbook, which has graced our pages regularly and in various incarnations, it's sometimes difficult to remember the company also does some very interesting notebooks. Today we're taking a look at the EX620, a 16in entertainment notebook that on paper seems to have it all: an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, discrete ATI video card, Blu-ray drive, Dolby Home Theater audio and a speaker system supported by an inbuilt subwoofer. MSI has gone to town on its EX620 multimedia notebook in terms of features and has made it very affordable into the bargain. This makes it a sensible option for those looking for good all-rounder, but little flaws like the awkward keyboard layout and only average styling, screen and speakers are worth bearing in mind before you buy.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI), is a Taiwan based computer hardware manufacturer since 1986 best known for desktop computer motherboards. MSI also designs and manufactures graphics cards, barebone PCs, notebook computers, networking products, servers, multimedia, consumer electronics, and storage devices. MSI, as most Taiwanese computer manufacturers, sells products on OEM/ODM basis. It also sells products worldwide based on its own brand name "MSI". The market share of laptops with the MSI brand is rather low.
MSI is not present in the smartphone market. As a laptop manufacturer, MSI has a medium market share and is not among the Top 10 global manufacturers. The ratings of MSI laptops are above average in the tests (as of 2016).
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
ATI Radeon Xpress X1270: Built in RS690T chipset and is based on an X700 graphics core (with less pipelines). It features no dedicated graphics memory but Vista Aero support.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400: This DirectX 10 graphic card from ATI is the direct competitor to the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphic card for laptops. It features the Avivo HD video engine. The performance is not enaough for DX 10 games and high settings.
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS: NVidia GeForce 8400M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7400 for laptops and technologically a slower 8400M GT video card (because of the smaller 64 Bit memory bus).
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470: Faster clocked HD 3450 and successor of the HD 2400 XT but with DirectX 10.1 and due to the new 55nm process, higher clockspeeds. Avivo HD video functions allow the decoding of HD videos.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T7500:
The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.
P7350:
Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
AMD Athlon 64 X2:
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.6 kg:
In former years, this weight was representative for laptops with a 14-16 inch display-diagonal. Nowadays, 17 inch laptops weigh less than that.
3.4 kg:
71.38%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
