Thinnest Pascal yet. This complete chassis overhaul provides GTX 980M-level graphics performance in a smaller, lighter, and cooler package. Fan noise is still a stumbling point for a series that delicately balances between a razer-sharp design philosophy and enthusiast-level GTX GPUs.

This GeForce GTX 1060 gamer is slim and light for a 17.3-inch model, and it delivers big-time for 1080p gaming. But its 120Hz LCD would be better matched with a more powerful graphics chip.

MSI clearly wants to be known as the gaming laptop company and they’re doing everything to make it happen. Given the simply insane number of new offerings and features including 1080 SLI at launch, 120Hz screens and much more, there is one thing I know: MSI is the reigning champ of gaming laptops.

As a whole, I’m pretty impressed with the GS73VR. As far as 17-inch laptops go, there aren’t many options that are portable at that screen size. The main highlights are the keyboard, GPU and the screen. Another thing I’m pretty happy with is the cooling system. On the other hand, my initial unit had some gaps and sharp edges which I personally find unacceptable, but it looks like that was a bad lot and not all the units get them, that's why I'm bumping the score to 4.25, but you should definitely look into this more. Read on for the whole story.

Actually, apart from the heat and loudness of this super thin gaming laptop, we didn’t find any major drawbacks that would outweigh (pun intended) the slim design and super light body for this size of a notebook. Tell us what you think of the MSI GS73VR 7RF Stealth Pro in the comments. Would you sacrifice performance for portability?

Ultimately, I cannot recommend the MSI GS73VR 7RF Stealth Pro based on its pricing and build quality. Perhaps another configuration, particularly one without a 4K screen, would be a better value, but my misgivings regarding the construction would likely remain the same. There are many better deals out there, and for less money. The Editors' Choice HP Omen 17, in particular, boasts a higher-quality design, an Nvidia GTX 1070 card and a 4K screen, for a significantly lower price of $1,799.

MSI GS73VR 7RF-212NE
The MSI GS73VR 7RF-212NE is a thin gaming laptop with a nice, 4K-resolution 17.3-inch display. There is plenty to like inside and outside, including an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics and great connectivity options, but the system is really targeted towards gamers and graphics professionals who want a large, accurate, high-res display in a slim chassis. The Stealth Pro commits to its name with a slim, all-black design and contour lines that are vaguely reminiscent of a stealth bomber. It is thin and relatively light for a 17-inch laptop, measuring 0.77 by 16.21 by 11.21 inches (HWD) and weighing 5.35 pounds. The body is made of a metal alloy, so it feels higher-end than plastic laptops at first, but while testing it, it became quickly obvious that there's significant flex in multiple spots, particularly when opening the lid. While the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 card in the Stealth Pro is VR-ready and plenty good enough for games new and old, it effectively cannot handle playing at the screen's native resolution with detail settings at ultra or high. This means that while users will be able to watch videos and complete other tasks in 4K, they won't be able to take advantage of it when playing demanding or newer titles, which is counterintuitive for a gaming laptop. However, users can set it to 4K and back the details down to medium and get playable (and enjoyable) frame rates or drop the resolution to HD and crank up the detail settings.
The 4K display is good for photo and video editing. MSI calibrates the screen and lets users easily switch between the sRGB and the 100-percent Adobe RGB color space. As for the input devices, the SteelSeries keyboard delivers a comfortable and responsive typing experience, and the RGB LED lighting in three zones is fun and useful. The touchpad is decent, too. Users can tune the sensitivity to help with palm rejection and cursor jumpiness. MSI's Dragon Center software groups together MSI's utilities, for doing things such as monitoring performance and adjusting display color, with third-party apps such as Nahimic 2 and SteelSeries Engine 3 for controlling the keyboard lighting and creating macros. For connectivity, there is USB 2.0, 3.0 and even USB 3.1 Type-C with Thunderbolt 3, and separate microphone and audio output jacks. The laptop can provide about 4 hours of battery life, which is shorter than the average these days. This might be due to the large 4K screen that drains the battery faster than a lower resolution screen.

If you don't mind paying extra for a thin chassis and a 17-inch 4K-resolution display, the MSI GS73VR Stealth Pro 4K is worth looking into, but you can get more performance for your money if you keep looking.

Iterative improvement. The GS73VR walks a delicate line between power and portability by packing NVIDIA's Pascal GPUs into a thin chassis late last summer. Now that a Kaby Lake option is available, are Intel's 7th generation chips worth the cost to upgrade the recent redesign of MSI's 17.3-inch thin-and-light?

Finally, a GS notebook with quieter fans. The MSI GS family has always been popular for its attractively thin design and enthusiast-level horsepower. Incorporating a Max-Q GPU is perhaps the best thing to happen to the series as it directly addresses one of its biggest and most persistent issues.
MSI GS73VR 7RG-003 Stealth Pro
The GS series from MSI has been characterized for a few generations by a very compact and lightweight design but was always very loud and hot. So it is no surprise that MSI uses the series to build the first Max-Q graphics cards in-house. The MSI GS73VR 7RG Stealth Pro is one of the first MSI notebooks to be powered by the Max-Q family of energy-efficient and efficient chips. With dimensions of 412 x 285 x 19.6 mm and a weight of only about 2.4 kg, the MSI GS73VR 7RG -003 Stealth Pro 4K is very compact and lightweight, especially with regard to the powerful hardware. The thin housing is partly at the expense of stability. Especially in the area of the keyboard bed, which can be pressed in comparatively deeply, and occasionally it creaks. In terms of design, MSI remains true to its line. The GS73VR 7RG Stealth Pro also uses a black brushed aluminum chassis and the usual dragon emblem on the screen lid, which is even illuminated during operation. The notebook is exclusively available with a 17.3-inch display, whose panel can be set to a viewing-angle-stable IPS or a responsive 120 Hz TN model. In MSI GS73VR 7RG-003 Stealth Pro, an FHD model with a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels is used. Powered by an Intel Core i7-7700HQ and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q, it boasts a fast 512 GB NVMe SSD and a 2 TB hard drive. The memory is 16 GB. In the display, MSI has opted for the fast 120 Hz version, which should be especially pleasing shooter players. Due to the 17.3-inch orientation, the MSI GS73VR 7RG Stealth Pro has its own number pad. However, the keys are much smaller than the rest of the keyboard. The WASD buttons, which are especially important for players, have not been highlighted in color by MSI. The keyboard, which once again arose in collaboration with SteelSeries, sets new color accents, but on the fly. Then all buttons are backlit by RGB LEDs. Unlike the flagship models, the backlight cannot be individually configured for each button, but the keyboard can be divided into three zones, which can be set separately. In terms of connections, it actually has everything a modern gaming notebook requires today. On the right side of the case, there is a Type-A USB 3.1 interface, the Type C port including Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, mini DisplayPort and the external power supply connector. Opposing, there are three other type-A USB ports, two gold-plated 3.5 mm phone jacks for headset connection, a card reader, a killer-feature Gigabit Ethernet interface, and a Kensington anti-theft feature. MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q: Efficient high end graphics card for thin and light laptops based on the same GP104 chip as the normal GTX 1070 for laptops but at slower clock speeds. Offers a approx. 15% lower performance but much lower power consumption.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 960M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7700HQ: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture. Besides four CPU cores (including Hyper Threading), the chips also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU and is manufactured in an improved 14 nm process.
