There’s plenty of power inside this machine, and MSI has squeezed top-level components into a chassis that’s slimmer and lighter than any gaming notebook we’ve yet seen. The screen and keyboard also excel, and the speakers are good. It’s a contender if rivals are expensive, but only worth a purchase if you’re going to be using it at a power source and on a desk – as poor battery life and thermal performance are the MSI’s key problems.

It is true, the machine does run rather warm, and it emits a fair level of noise under heavy, sustained load. There is absolutely nothing MSI can do about this – apart from add in more fans and increase noise levels well past 40dBA. MSI have clearly spent some time in the R&D department, balancing the heat against noise emissions. Even though the machine does get very warm under load it never suffered from throttling during our tests. If you pick one up however, we do advise that you keep the rear vents clear from any obstructions. MSI are selling several versions of the MSI GS60 2PE Ghost Pro 15.6 inch Laptop. This particular model we reviewed today, is available from Overclockers UK for £1,399.99 inc vat, although it has just sold out as we went to press. MSI did tell us that this is one of their more popular models, and it isn’t difficult to see why.

Model:
This thin gaming laptop is powered by a fourth generation Intel core i7 processor and features an Nvidia GeForce graphics. It should be powerful and fast enough to handle every game thrown at it and run it well.
The GS60 is lighter and thinner than its gaming laptop competition at a mere 1.96 kg and 20 mm height. The 15.6-inch screen display at 1920 x 1080 resolution delivers vibrant colors. Two speakers and two subwoofers are placed at the bottom and deliver a great sound. The backlit keyboard that can be adjusted in multiple colors and multiple areas.
With two 128 GB solid state drives in RAID 0 configuration and a 1 TB HDD, there should be plenty of space in this gaming laptop to house a number of games. The laptop has three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, audio jacks and an Ethernet connector.
The downside of this gaming laptop is the unbearable heat that it emits during heavy gaming. The high heat prevents users from setting the laptop on their laps. The noise of the fan is distracting, too. The MSI barely lasted two hours without being plugged in on normal use (web browsing and video chat) and would not last an hour while gaming.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M: High-end graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4700HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
15.60":
15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
80%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
