MSI GE73VR 7RF Raider
While most gamers would balk at the sight of a thick unwieldy gaming notebook, there are still some who would be willing to contend with a slightly thicker gaming notebook if it doesn’t end up sacrificing performance but deliver extra feature on top of the premium pricing. One such example is the MSI GE73VR 7RF Raider which still appeals to the traditional gamer. The MSI GE73VR 7RF Raider is equipped with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor with 16 GB of RAM, a combination of a 512 GB SSD and a 1 TB hard disk and last but not least an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 graphics processor. The GE73VR 7RF Raider sports MSI’s standard black and red accents without looking over the top when compared to its market competitors. The whole chassis is made out of brushed aluminium, which solidifies its premium build quality not to mention it is quite rigid and sturdy. What is even more welcome is that unlike most manufacturers MSI has made sure the device is easily user serviceable. You only have to remove its single base cover in order to access its components. Because this is a 17-inch notebook it naturally means that there should be plenty of space on deck for a full-sized keyboard. What may irk some users that it seems to have a slightly cramped keyboard, which isn’t really making use of the abundant real estate. This is counteracted with its good key travel distance, speed and consistency. The keyboard also comes bundled with a SteelSeries Engine 3 software to control its RGB backlighting. However, this cannot be said for its touchpad, which feels somewhat spongy and wrongly positioned. As this is a gaming notebook, GPU performance is important. The Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 sports 2048 cores, which is slightly more than the desktop version. Hence, you can be certain that the GE73VR 7RF Raider packs a solid punch and is able to handle most if not all games at ultra settings. This is emphasized by the VR in its name, which indicates this notebook is VR ready. Although this notebook comes with 16 GB of RAM by default, which occupies both slots, users can actually expand its memory up to 32 GB if they so desire by getting 2x16 GB sticks. The GE73VR 7RF Raider sports a 1080p screen which feels a little scrawny for a notebook of this size what less of a GPU which was designed to handle 4K. This is not necessarily a bad point by all means if you intend to game in a constant 60 FPS or above. The included display unfortunately neither supports G-Sync nor Freesync supported. What somewhat makes this up is that it is a 120 Hz panel. The display is reasonably bright and scores well in sRGB ratings at 100%. Hence, users who do some media creation on the side will benefit from it. MSI did not spare a cent by equipping the GE73VR 7RF Raider with two speakers and two subwoofers, which allows bass to be solid although surprisingly the mids feel a little weaker than what one would expect. While the battery life does not always apply to notebooks of this size and caliber it is still quite interesting to know that with the power optimizations of the Pascal based GPU the GE73VR 7RF Raider was able to pull 3 hours and 57 minutes on Wi-Fi. Overall, the GE73VR 7RF Raider is as hardy as most MSI made notebooks not to mention the quality and features offered. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Here comes some color! The MSI GE73VR 7RF Raider offers very good gaming performance at a weight below 3 kg (~6.6 lb). The 17-inch laptop masters even long gaming sessions. Whether there are weaknesses and if so where, you can find out in our review with a multitude of benchmarks.

The MSI GE73VR 7RF Raider is a very expensive laptop, andwe’d consider going the DIY desktop route with this sort of budget. Then again, you can’t exactly stuff a desktop into your backpack, and not everyone has the space, which is why such laptops exist. Looking at the competition, Dell has its Alienware 17 with a similar configuration (no 120Hz display but you do get 512GB SSD) which commands a higher price, and then there's HP’s Omen 17-an009tx, which is priced a tad lower and features a very similar core configuration as the Raider, including the 120Hz display.

MSI GE73 VR Raider is a solid package, particularly if you’re behind the curve and looking to catch up. It’s got great specs and all the bells and whistles you want out of a gaming laptop. All told, it can run pretty much everything out at the moment without breaking too much of a sweat.

The MSI is a couple of hundred quid more expensive than the HP, but the extra cash results in a notebook that’s more versatile in every key department and better in many important areas. If you’re in the market for a 17.3in gaming notebook, the MSI is a better choice.

Another factor that would tip the scales in MSI’s favor is the adequate touchpad and cool temperatures during extremely high loads, especially for such a form factor. Adding the possibility of maxing out the fans with one button boosts the thermal effectiveness even further, although you should hold the GE73VR 7RF close, as there is a high possibility of it taking off from your desk.

The MSI GE73VR Raider Pro is a hardy gaming machine that offers strong performance, a slick new design and speakers loud enough to fill a room. But its display, while colorful, is dimmer than the competition, and its keyboard doesn't offer the tactile feel I like for gaming.

MSI GE73 8RF-211DE - Raider RGB
The MSI GE73 8RF-211DE - Raider RGB is under the MSI GE series, which has always been a cheaper alternative to the GT series. In addition to the powerful processor, it also offers a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics chip, although the whole is not much thicker than the average multimedia notebooks. The computer's body is black and quite decent. By default, it can be clearly understood that this is a gaming laptop because the backlight of the keypad plays all the colors and makes different color transitions across the keys. Something similar happens on the outside of the lid. Fortunately, these effects are adjustable and a user can change them both in static colors or turn it off. The computer has 419 x 287 x 33 mm (419 x 287 x 33 mm) in its closed state, which does not differ fundamentally from conventional 17" laptops. Powerful hardware and its larger coolers were at a weight of 2.94 kg. The computer still provides acceptable mobility, although it probably will not be the preferred choice of people who travel with the computer every day. The GE73 8RF features a matt TN screen with good contrast and fast response times. MSI's innovative Matrix Display supports up to 2 external displays simultaneously through 1x HDMI port and 1x Mini DisplayPort 1.2. Multi-task is made possible even during competitive gameplay. A user can connect the laptop to HDTV display. Matrix Display supports 4K output with a resolution up to 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. The MSI Matrix Display technology creates an ideal environment for extreme gaming experience and pleasant multimedia entertainment. The GE73 is powered by a Core i7-8750H (Coffee Lake) hexa-core processor. It is a mobile chip with a TDP of 45 watts, but it can be briefly increase to 90 watts. The processor operates at a base clock speed of 2.2 GHz. The clock speed can be increased to 3.9 GHz (six cores), 4 GHz (four cores) or 4.1 GHz (one or two cores) via turbo. MSI incorporated a solid-state drive, a powerful processor, and a dual-channel enabled working memory to ensure a snappy system. MSI furnished the model with an M.2-2880 SATA-III SSD from Toshiba with a storage capacity of 256 GB out of which around 191 GB are available to the user. The storage required for a gaming notebook is provided by a 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive. As for RAM, the GE73 has two 8 GB SO-DIMM DDR4-2400 RAM, which adds up to 16 GB. The left side is equipped with a pair of audio connectors (input, output), one USB-C (3.1 Gen2), classic USB 3.0, video outputs (mini-DisplayPort, HDMI) and a LAN connection. On the right side, user will find a pair of USB 3.0, an SD XC memory card reader and a power adapter socket. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Light organ. MSI equips the GE73 8RF with a hexa-core Coffee Lake-series processor, which provides a significant increase in performance over its predecessor. The notebook smoothly runs all current computer games on its responsive 120-Hz TN panel (Full-HD).

It doesn't seem all that long ago that gaming laptops finally made the move away from mobile variants of desktop hardware, to fitting desktop hardware onto a mobile platform. The major push from all three big companies - Nvidia, Intel and AMD - towards greater efficiency meant that you were no longer crippled when comparing a desktop to a laptop of similar specifications.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
