Deal | Looks cozy, plays tough: This classic strategy game is under $3 on Steam

Carcassonne: The Official Board Game takes players to medieval southern France, where they gradually build a landscape of cities, roads, monasteries and fields. There's no traditional storyline. Instead, the goal is to claim the most valuable territories possible while outsmarting the competition. The strategy game is currently 70% off on Steam until November 15, bringing the price down to $2.99 from just under $10. According to SteamDB, the game was last available at this price in September.
The gameplay is easy to explain: Each turn, players draw a random landscape tile and place it so that it connects properly to the existing map. They can then place one of their playing pieces, known as meeples, to claim a particular area. Depending on where these little figures are placed, they become knights, robbers, monks or farmers. Completing cities or roads earns points, and the meeples used there become available for new tasks. However, since the number of meeples is limited, players need to think carefully about where to deploy them.
Alongside matches against AI opponents, the game also offers online multiplayer and a local pass-and-play mode. While some of the social charm of a physical board game is inevitably lost on screen, the digital version makes up for it with several convenient features. Scores are calculated automatically, the number of remaining tiles can be checked at any time and additional tools make strategic planning easier.

In Steam reviews, players particularly praise Carcassonne for its considerable strategic depth, high replay value and largely faithful adaptation of the classic board game. The tile-placement game is said to be especially enjoyable with friends. However, the technical side of things is considerably less impressive. Common complaints include unstable servers, connection drops and poorly developed AI that sometimes takes several minutes to make even simple moves. The cumbersome user interface and lack of developer support have also frustrated players. Despite these shortcomings, 83% of more than 2,800 Steam user reviews are positive.
Carcassonne is officially rated only Steam Deck Playable, but ProtonDB awards it a Platinum rating. That suggests there should be few technical obstacles to enjoying the game on Valve's handheld.
