Limited edition Pokémon Oreos are selling for thousands of dollars on eBay, the Mew Oreo is the rarest of them all
The hype and craze that is revolving around Nintendo's Pokémon does not seem to find an end. On the contrary, the reports about coveted Pokémon merchandise appears to become more and more absurd every day. We just recently reported on the long waiting lines that formed in Japan when shops started selling a reprint of certain sets of Pokémon cards (from US$6 on Amazon). Now there are even Pokémon branded baked goods that are reaching absolutely irrational prices among fans.
According to a report by NPR, the more or less rare Pokémon Oreos are being listed on eBay for insane prices of up to US$100,000. Some unopened packs of Oreos, which usually sell for around US$4 in local supermarkets, have supposedly been sold for up to US$1,200. Since these cookie packs have not been opened, it is not clear if they even include one of the rare Pokémon Oreos, which makes it even more unreasonable to pay such an amount of money for them.
Single Oreos with certain Pokémon on them are apparently particularly sought after. Many sellers securely pack these Oreos into small plastic bags, while some others claim that they have never touched the cookie except with thongs. Among the overall 16 Pokémon Oreos that show Pokémon like Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, the Mew Oreo is supposedly the rarest of them all and therefore reaches ridiculous prices. NPR claims that some of these online auctions with prices of more than US$15,000 have indeed successfully found a buyer.
