eBay accidentally deleted several user accounts on December 3, 2021. No one knows why the accounts were deleted. Users on Reddit suspected that it was the result of an algorithm misbehaving. Upon contacting the customer service, banned individuals reportedly received no help from the support staff. However, eBay resolved the issue the following day and has since started reinstating suspended accounts.
On December 4, the company announced on Twitter that users who inadvertently got kicked out are getting notified about recovering their accounts. Users who were banned but not notified were directed to DM @AskeBay on Twitter with their name, email, and zip. Talking to The Verge, eBay’s Tarina Somera stated that the company has taken care of the issue and has also informed the affected users about the actions they need to take.
Although many people took to Reddit and Twitter to voice their concerns, it looks like the incident was more of a mishap than an intentional hack of some sort. Thankfully, no one suffered any monetary loss or data breach. And while some users saw their bids getting canceled, it was for the products that they had already paid for and received.
