Paying homage to the cult-classic horror movie, Limited Run Games has announced a physical re-release of the 1987 NES classic Jaws for the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch, dubbed Jaws: Retro Edition. This release comes just in time for the film’s 50th anniversary in 2025.
Jaws for the NES was originally developed by LJN and was directly inspired by Steven Spielberg’s movie. The game throws players into a showdown against the relentless great white shark. Players navigate a boat from a top-down camera perspective with side-scrolling harpoon hunting, followed by a 3D boss battle.
Almost 40 years later, this cult classic is back not just as a faithful port, but also promises modern enhancements and a “massively expanded” overhaul, drawing inspiration from all four entries in the Jaws franchise.
Limited Run Games' re-release, known as Jaws: Retro Edition, comes in two physical flavors for both retro collectors and casual retro gamers. The Standard Edition, priced at $34.99, includes a region-free physical copy of the game and an eight-page booklet.
For collectors looking for a premium experience, the Bigger Boat Edition ups the ante with a staggering $99.99 package containing everything from the Standard Edition, along with an NES-inspired slipcover box, a CD containing the original soundtrack composed by Shinichi Sakamoto, a “Beach Closed” enamel pin, a keychain, and a pixelated great white shark lamp.
Both versions of the game contain the original NES version with a few quality-of-life tweaks, including the ability to save anywhere, a rewind feature, achievements and trophies, a built-in music player, and an art gallery.
Included in Jaws: Retro Edition is the new Enhanced Edition, which features a multi-chapter story that ups the ante by incorporating different elements from all four Jaws movies rather than just the “good one.”
Pre-orders for Jaws: Retro Edition will start next Friday, December 19, at 10 AM ET on the Limited Run Games website and will continue until January 18, 2026. Currently, the game is in pre-production status with no purchase limits.
Whether you’re a fan of Spielberg films or a collector on the hunt for revived retro classics, Jaws: Retro Edition makes sure the great white shark’s legend swims on.
