Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 21KV001SGE

The latest to join the Lenovo family is none other than the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7. This model marks a significant design departure from its predecessors, bringing a modernized aesthetic and refined build quality while maintaining the brand's hallmark durability and functionality. Crafted with an aluminium lid featuring diamond-cut edges and slim bezels, the laptop exudes sophistication while offering improved screen-to-body ratios. However, the black anodized finish, although stylish, remains prone to smudges. Its robust hinges allow a 180-degree screen rotation, providing versatility in professional environments. As for its display, the P1 Gen 7 offers three display options, all in a 16-inch, 16:10 format which includes a WUXGA IPS panel, a WQXGA IPS screen with a 165Hz refresh rate, and a WQUXGA OLED option for superior colour fidelity. These displays deliver excellent brightness and contrast, with the WQXGA model standing out for its balance of performance and clarity at 500 nits brightness. Talking about its keyboard, Lenovo has introduced a revamped keyboard with a slightly smaller layout, allowing component sharing across ThinkPad lines. While some users may find the new dimensions inconvenient, particularly in ISO layouts, the typing experience remains comfortable, thanks to the 1.5mm travel and higher actuation force. As for its haptic touchpad, inspired by the ThinkPad Z16, it is much larger and integrates TrackPoint buttons seamlessly. Though lacking dedicated buttons, it still manages to deliver accurate and customizable feedback.

Powered by Intel’s Meteor Lake H-series processors, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 offers up to the Core Ultra 9 185H CPU, complemented by Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 GPUs. While this configuration represents a downgrade in GPU options as compared to its predecessor, the device still delivers solid mid-range performance suitable for professional tasks like 3D modelling and video editing. In addition to that, the maximum 64GB LPDDR5X memory and dual M.2 SSD slots ensure smooth multitasking and ample storage capacity, up to 8TB. The system's performance shines in multi-core tasks, thanks to its 16-core processor architecture. However, it trails in single-core benchmarks compared to older Raptor Lake chips. Gaming is feasible, though the reduced VRAM (8GB) limits its capability for high-end titles. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 improves significantly on battery life, boasting up to 10 hours in Wi-Fi usage tests, a considerable leap from its predecessor's 4-hour runtime. The 90Wh battery paired with Meteor Lake's efficiency enhances mobility. Charging is flexible, with support for USB-C (100W) and Lenovo's proprietary Slim Tip charger. In summary, this model stands out for its premium design, improved portability, and refined input devices. While the decision to forgo high-end GPUs may deter some power users, the laptop still manages to compensate with its excellent build quality, versatile displays, and enhanced battery life. As a whole, it is a workstation tailored for professionals seeking reliability, style, and mobility in one sleek package.

83.5% Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 review: Without TrackPoint buttons, with Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 | Notebookcheck
For the new Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7, the new design is the main attraction. The high-end workstation is more premium, repairable and easier to use. At its core lies the new haptic Sensel touchpad, which successfully takes over the function of the formerly dedicated TrackPoint buttons.
100% Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 review: One of the best workstation laptops on the market

When looking at machines like the ThinkPad P1 G7 it feels wrong to get bogged down in the sordid matter of money. This is a premium laptop aimed at discerning users with deep pockets who want one of the best workstation laptops on the market. Such things never come cheap. Having acknowledged that we are straying into the arena of money being no object the new ThinkPad has to be awarded five stars for its excellent design, faultless build quality, impressive battery life, and a vast range of specification alternatives. Looking at Lenovo's configurator we discovered that a machine with the same basic spec as our test unit but with an Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU would set us back £3,049 (£2,540 ex VAT). Granted that price includes the £520 discount that Lenovo is currently offering but the end result would be a potent laptop that's worth every penny.

90% Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 review: A nearly perfect workstation
Source: Laptop Mag English
While it may not be the most powerful workstation we’ve ever seen here at Laptop Mag, the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 has enough power and performance to handle photo and video editing, 3D rendering, or heavy data analysis you’d want out of a workstation machine. With a comparatively low starting price, it’s a pretty solid deal even when kitted out with an upgraded processor, GPU, memory, and storage. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 also boasts an incredible 17-hour and 23-minute battery life, modern light and thin design, loud high-fidelity audio, plenty of ports, and a satisfying keyboard.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU: High-end graphics card for laptops based on the Ada Lovelace architecture. Offers 8 GB GDDR6 (128 Bit) and is configurable with a TGP of 35 - 115W (+ Dynamic Boost).

NVIDIA Nvidia RTX 1000 Ada Generation Laptop GPU: A lower-end professional graphics card for use in laptops that sports 2,560 CUDA cores and 6 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It would be fair to say that this is a GeForce RTX 4050 (Laptop) in disguise; consequently, both are powered by the AD107 chip and are fast enough to handle most games at 1080p with quality set to High. The product was brought into existence in February 2024. It leverages TSMC's 5 nm process and the Ada Lovelace architecture; the Nvidia-recommended TGP range is very wide at 35 W to 140 W leading to bizarre performance differences between different systems powered by what is supposed to be the same graphics card.

Intel Meteor Lake-H:

Ultra 7 155H: A high-end Meteor Lake chip that debuted in December 2023. This 1st Gen Core Ultra processor has come to replace 13th generation Core chips; it has 16 cores (6 + 8 + 2) and 22 threads at its disposal. Its Performance cores, of which there are 6, run at up to 4.8 GHz while its Efficient cores, of which there are 10 (8 main cores plus 2 extra ones found in the Low Power Island) run at up to 3.8 GHz. The integrated AI Boost NPU offers two Gen 3 engines for hardware AI workload acceleration. This laptop processor's Base power consumption is 28 W while its Turbo power consumption is supposed to stay within 115 W.

16.00:

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

No weight comment found (one expected)!

93.38%: This rating is indeed excellent. There are not many models that are rated better. This can definitely be seen as a purchase recommendation.
