Lenovo itself advertises the 16-inch ThinkBook as a "powerful creativity tool" and a "business laptop"; after all, the origins of the ThinkBook series lie in the office segment. However, with an RTX 3060 and a powerful Ryzen processor, the series also penetrates the gaming segment. Is the device a versatile hidden gem for gamers and creators alike?

The ThinkBook 16p Gen2 has room for improvement, particularly with its relatively modest 2.5K IPS display, which won't pass muster for high-end graphics and video work. And even Apple now admits that professional laptops need HDMI connectivity for external displays. But if you're happy to use an external display in the office, then the ThinkBook 16p Gen 2 can deliver workstation-class performance, along with an attractive, lightweight design and a competitive price.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 2 is a huge improvement over the ThinkBook 15p we reviewed a year ago. This 16” laptop for creators has some of the most popular current features like a 16:10 aspect ratio QHD+ display, AMD Ryzen 5 and 7 H series 45 watt processors and NVIDIA RTX 3060 dedicated graphics. The subtly two-tone lid and body are aluminum, the laptop has both a fingerprint scanner and IR Windows Hello camera and it typically ships with 16GB RAM and a 512GB or 1TB SSD. With the same horsepower as an entry level Lenovo Legion, it’s got some game too. This model was released in the late fall of 2021, and will likely be refreshed mid-2022 when the new Ryzen platform is available.

If this is how the future looks like, then we are really excited about it. Lenovo managed to combine the power of a gaming notebook, the style of a business device, and the versatility of a content creator machine into one sleek laptop. And it did it successfully. We saw a very good performance from the hardware we had on hand, with the only hiccup being the high temperature of the CPU after long periods of stress. But arguably the best feature in this regard is the MUX switch. It allows you to toggle between switchable graphics, and direct connection to the dedicated GPU, ensuring you take advantage of the full horsepower this laptop provides. Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 2’s IPS panel (MNG007DA1-4 (LEN8A97)) has a high resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, wide viewing angles, and a very good contrast ratio. Thankfully, it doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. What is even more appealing for professionals, is the fact that it has a color accuracy that matches the sRGB standard with the help of our Gaming and Web design profile.

The 2022 Gen 3 model is a small update to the 2021 Gen 2 model, but some of the changes are significant and even unexpected. How much of a performance difference can users expect between the two models?

However, if content creation is your game, you'll likely either have to spend more in the business sector or consider consumer-grade options, like the HP Envy 16. HP's alternative delivers the best color coverage of the bunch, and it earns high marks for the money on most of our benchmarks. At its pricing, the Editors' Choice award-winning HP Envy 16 is a downright competitive alternative.

Some laptops are harder than others to categorize and rate. The ThinkBook 16p Gen 3 is such a machine. While Lenovo stresses its suitability for small and medium-sized businesses, I didn’t find much that makes the laptop truly stand out for this crowd. Things like webcam privacy features and user presence sensing exist on mainstream consumer laptops, as do attractive aesthetics and solid performance. The ThinkBook 16p even comes with a one-year warranty, which is industry standard and less than many true business machines offer. At the same time, while performance was solid and battery life was better than you’ll find in some other 16-inch laptops, build quality wasn’t up to par given the high starting price of $2,359. Spend this much money, and you can get a Dell XPS 15 that’s roughly as fast, built much better, and has a significantly better display. In evaluating the ThinkBook 16p as a suitable machine for SMB users, I end up being unconvinced this has any serious advantages. There really isn’t that much there that you won’t find on some other mainstream laptops aimed at consumers, and the build doesn’t live up to the price tag.

While I really disliked the trackpad on this laptop, everything else about it is beyond perfect and I found myself using it more than I should. The display is amazingly bright and colorful, the battery life goes beyond my expectations, and the raw power for gaming and photo editing is perfect.

There is no doubt that the Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 is an excellent business device. It has a metal build that feels premium. Well, the lid is a bit flexible but the base is rigid. We have nothing to moan about the input devices. The spill-resistant keyboard has a backlight and a NumPad. The board is comfortable for usage thanks to the long key travel and the clicky feedback. The wide touchpad is smooth and accurate.
