Reviews for the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14APH8
The Legion Slim 5 14 is the smallest and most travel-friendly Legion laptop yet and its OLED display is certainly a standout feature not found on most other gaming laptops. However, it's missing a key feature that gamers ought to be aware of.

The Legion Slim 5 is one of the most complete laptop packages on the market. It’s reasonably small and light, has decent battery life, a good keyboard and a superb display, and it can play the latest AAA games in all their ray-traced glory. For under £1,500, what more can you want? In the next few weeks we’ve got other 14in compact gamers coming in for review from HP (the Omen Transcend 14) and Asus ROG (the Zephyrus G14). Both machines cost more than the Legion Slim 5, so they’ll have to be something very special to knock the new Lenovo off its perch.

Where Lenovo scores over the competition is in price: a fully-loaded Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14 Gen 8 with a 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM only costs £1474. That makes it a genuine bargain. The HP Omen Transcend 14 range starts at £1699, but that only gets you an RTX 4050 GPU. Upgrading to the RTX 4060 moves the price to £1799, which still only bags you 16GB of RAM. Apple’s new M3 MacBook Pro 14 range starts at £1699, and for that, you must suffer with a 512GB SSD. The 1TB model costs £200 more. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 will set you back £1899.99 for the RTX 4060 version on Amazon. Of course, there are many gaming/creative laptops that can give the Legion Slim 5 a good spanking when it comes to performance like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 but they are much bigger, much heavier and much more expensive. If you are looking for the perfect intersection of performance, value and convenience, that’s where you’ll find the Legion Slim 5 14 Gen 8. If you need a powerful compact multipurpose laptop, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 (14″, Gen 8) could be on your shortlist. It has a neutral clean design, an all-metal build and you can open the lid with one hand. Still, the overall rigidity isn’t great though. The input devices are comfortable. The keyboard is suitable for long typing sessions or gaming, and the touchpad is smooth and accurate. The 14.5K OLED display (Samsung ATNA45AF02-0 (SDC4188) is a small gem. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio and an infinite contrast ratio. The display is suitable for gaming with its super-fast pixel response times. That’s not all – the panel covers fully the DCI-P3 gamut and its color accuracy can be enhanced to an average dE value of 1.8 with our “Design and Gaming” profile. The only downside of the screen is the PWM usage which is the main con of many other OLED units.

So, what did we think about Lenovo’s Legion Slim 5? It’s pretty good, and that’s why it’s a Top Pick of 2023. The laptop handled everything pretty well, even with some of the little nitpicks that I had about it — but nothing’s perfect. None of my issues are a dealbreaker, and for what you get in the laptop and the price, it’s worth picking up either from Lenovo or your local electronics store.

The 14.5-inch Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Gen 8 impresses on all fronts, especially value, keeping pace with or outperforming more costly competitors like the Alienware x14 R2 and the Razer Blade 14 in our benchmarks. It makes no major compromises, not even battery life, which isn't something we can say about MSI's Stealth 14 Studio. A beautiful OLED screen, a comfortable keyboard and touchpad, a wide enough array of ports, and admirable build quality solidify its appeal and earn it a well-deserved Editors' Choice award for gamers seeking an easily portable system.

Due to how close the 14- and 16-inch Slim 5 models come in terms of performance, I'd take the more compact laptop every time. Not only is it easier to carry around despite an all-metal build, its streamlined design is more appealing, and it has that gorgeous 2.8K OLED display. This is one of the best laptops that I've tested this year, and it should be given a strong consideration if you'd like to keep your gaming laptop well within the limits of portable.

Lenovo has been putting out tons of gaming laptops at different price points. The Lenovo Legion 5 Slim 14 is another one of its more affordable entries that balances a sleek metal look, beautiful display, and excellent overall performance. However, it doesn't play too nice with ray tracing and the battery life is inconsistent.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
