The Lenovo Legion 5i is a budget-friendly, minimalistic laptop that is perfect for folks who get down to business in the morning and enjoy PC gaming at night. For the most part, the Legion 5i crushed its entry-level rivals in the frames-per-second gaming race, especially when it comes to popular titles such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Hitman and Grand Theft Auto V. It also outputted a decent VR gaming benchmark score, blowing its competitors out of the water.

The Lenovo Legion 5i is a solid mid-ranger masquerading as a low-budget option for gamers. For a respectable $1,600 gamers get a device they can tote around from the office (be it just the upstairs bedroom now) to their favorite spot on the couch to play games. The subtle hardware refinement and muted design singles a convergence of hardware that Lenovo is looking to continue to make going forward. Looking at a Yoga or Ideapad now, it’s not too hard to see a Legion-gaming option of that hardware as the two device designs grow to mimic each other.

This is a more than capable mid-range laptop, if you’re in the market for a gaming laptop that makes a few compromises to give you great performance at a compelling price point then the Lenovo Legion 5i is worth checking out.

Honestly, when it comes to casual gaming, I don't know how you can beat that. It also future-proofs you a lot better than the $969 model that B&H is also offering, with the Core i7, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, a 60Hz display, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 with 4GB GDDR6. For $1,299, the model I reviewed is the sweet spot.

There's plenty to like about the Legion 5i, from a sturdy build to solid gaming performance. It's not the lightest or most exciting design, but it feels well-made and includes some advanced features. The keyboard is improved over past iterations, and the webcam placement is more sensible. Add a GPU that just about matches the performance of a more expensive option from previous-generation Legion laptops, as well as a superior processor, and this is an overall better value than before.

This package is what I wanted the IdeaPad Gaming 3 to be: a powerful gaming laptop that doesn’t make heavy compromises in visual fidelity to get a fast frame rate. The Legion 5i is far from perfect, though. Its 720p webcam looks horrendous, and there are too few perks (specs aside) included with buying this over Lenovo’s more affordable gaming machine. A Thunderbolt 3 port and an SD card reader would have been appreciated. Alas, your main reward for spending more cash here simply results in a faster computer, and one that’s still relatively affordable compared to similarly configured 15.6-inch computers from competitors like Razer and MSI.

Lenovo: Lenovo ( "Le" as in the English word legend and "novo" (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. From 2004, the company has been the largest laptop manufacturer in China and got the fourth largest manufacturer worldwide after the acquisition of IBM's PC division in 2005. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company also produces monitors, projectors, servers, etc.
In 2011, Lenovo acquired the majority of Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Lenovo took over Motorola Mobility, which gave them a boost in the smartphone market.
From 2014 to 2016 Lenovo's market share in the global notebook market was 20-21%, ranking second behind HP. However, the distance decreased gradually. In the smartphone market, Lenovo did not belong to the Top 5 global manufacturers in 2016.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile: Mid range dedicated graphics card for laptops that uses a Turing TU117 chip without raytracing and Tensor cores. Should be slightly faster than a GTX 1650, but is also available in different variants with a TGP ranging from 55 - 80 Watt (and two packages).
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile: Mid range to high end laptop graphics card based on the Turing architecture with raytracing features and 1,920 shaders. Compared to the similar named desktop card it offers reduced clock rates.
